MCWAH URM Housestaff
URM Mission Statement
The URM Housestaff Committee is comprised of residents and fellows of the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, trainees and others interested in promoting diversity. The Committee assists in recruitment of underrepresented minorities to MCWAH residency programs. It provides socializing and networking opportunities among peers and enhances career development. It also encourages involvement in the larger community.

My roots are here in Milwaukee, and it was important for me to stay close to home. Equally as important, however, was my desire to train with great clinicians in an environment that was both challenging and supportive. As a student at MCW, I had positive experiences with residents and faculty from many departments. So, when it came time to look at residency programs, I knew this was the place for me.

I'm originally from Washington State, but I went to college at U.C. Berkeley, medical school at U.C.S.F., and residency at U.C. Davis, so I'm a West Coaster, California transplant. People always ask me what am I doing in Milwaukee of all places when I'm from California? I have a couple of reasons for this; I applied out here because I have family in Wisconsin and Illinois for one thing. Also, one of my mentors advised me to go where you like the people you are going to work with, and after interviewing here, I really felt like it was a good fit, and I ranked MCW #1. I was really excited when I got my first choice in Cardiology on match day, and I think it was a good decision, though the winter weather does take a little getting used to! Dr. Malmsten
Update: Dr. Malmsten finished her cardiology fellowship in 2010, and is now the associate program director of the cardiovascular medicine fellowship here at MCW.
