Cancer Center

Ming You, MD, PhD, is Director of the MCW Cancer Center, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Senior Associate Dean for Cancer Research, Education and Clinical Care, and the Joseph F. Heil Professor in Molecular Oncogenesis.

The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center is an integrated partnership of more than 200 College faculty who are cancer research scientists and physicians based at the Medical College, Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Zablocki VA Medical Center, and the BloodCenter of Wisconsin.

Through basic and clinical research, College faculty are investigating the causes of cancer and translating this knowledge into improved treatments for cancer patients. The Center conducts many clinical trials, giving patients the most innovative treatments available.

Medical College faculty receive significant, highly competitive cancer research funding from the National Institutes of Health and other federal and private funding agencies. They have contributed to discoveries in functional magnetic resonance imaging, photodynamic therapy, low-dose radio-therapy, use of radio-protective agents, improved melanoma detection in sentinel lymph nodes, T cell-depleted bone marrow transplantation from unrelated donors, and breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is home to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research, a National Cancer Institute-funded database with records on more than 200,000 procedures done at 500 medical centers in 50 countries.

Current areas of emphasis in cancer research include:

  • Blood and Marrow Transplantation
  • Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy
  • Cancer Cell Signaling, Growth and Metastasis
  • Cancer Genetics
  • Cancer Biophysics: Molecular Imaging, Chemical Biology and Chemoprevention
  • Tumor Angiogenesis and Metastasis
  • Cancer Outcomes
  • Clinical Oncology Programs, including Neuro-oncology
  • Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, and Head and Neck Cancer
