Children’s Research Institute

Ellis Avner, MD, is Director of Children’s Research Institute, Associate Dean for Research, Director of the National Research Center of Excellence in Pediatric Nephrology, and Professor of Pediatrics (Nephrology) and Physiology.

Children’s Research Institute advances state-of-the-art pediatric health care through translational research programs to find life-saving discoveries and cures in the diseases that affect children. The Institute is committed to discovering interventions that enhance quality of life for children and families living with chronic health conditions.

Children’s Research Institute brings together the expertise of Medical College faculty engaged in pediatric research. Based on the concept of translational research, Children’s Research Institute is designed to take clinical problems from patients’ bedsides to the laboratory. Laboratory discoveries are then converted into new treatments, preventions, therapies and cures for patients.

Children’s Research Institute focuses on research that promises to improve the health of children as dramatically as the discovery of antibiotics did a century ago. Some of the research themes and platforms include:

  • Behavioral Health
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular Biology
  • Clinical Effectiveness and Outcomes
  • Community Health and Prevention
  • Developmental and Cell Biology
  • Genomics
  • Immunobiology

The Institute is a member of Children’s Hospital and Health System and is affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, The Medical College of Wisconsin, Marquette University College of Nursing and UW-Milwaukee College of Nursing.
