Daniel J. McDermott, PhD, has been named the first ever Graduate School Alumnus of the Year Dr. McDermott earned his PhD in physiology in 1969 from the Medical College.
Dr. McDermott has dedicated his career to studying the safety and efficacy of pharmaceuticals in patient populations. He has overseen multiple phases of clinical trials in the pharmaceutical industry, and helped develop and introduce the anti-arrhythmic drug Norpace at G.D. Searle and Co., as well as Aldara, a 3M Pharmaceuticals medication that is effective in the treatment of HPV disease and also has applications for particular skin cancers.
He also was involved with the development and introduction of chymopapain to treat patients with a herniated lumbar disc. He is currently a consultant advising in pharmaceutical and medical device development in the St. Paul, Minn., area.
“I am honored to have been chosen the first Graduate School Alumnus of the Year because there are many alumni from the Grad School of the Medical College of Wisconsin who have pursued distinguished careers in academia, government and industry,” Dr. McDermott said. “Also, I am humbled because I know my accomplishments are not a reflection of my effort alone but invariably a consequence of a team effort.”
Dr. McDermott earned his BS in 1958 from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He also earned a M.S. from the University of Minnesota. He presently lives in North Oaks, Minn., with his wife, Jan.
