    Tim Flewelen, PhD

    student profile: tim flewellen

Why did you choose to come to MCW?

I chose MCW because of the research being done here. It's a great school where I know I can get the best education.

Comment on life in Wauwatosa or Milwaukee.

I love Wauwatosa, it's a great little city filled with nice people and everything that I could ever need. I'm originally from Dallas, Texas and I enjoy being close to the lake and seeing the seasons change.

What lab rotations or mentors have especially inspired you?

I have been inspired by all my rotations. I have learned many things in each one from how to write a paper to giving a good oral presentation.

What type of networking opportunities have you had within your department, school and discipline?

I think being in the Graduate School programs allowed me to create a great network of expert scientists in many different disciplines.  I see the benefits from this rotation system as a great way to network with scientists both on and off campus.

What are your plans after graduation?

During my graduate school program I decided to pursue an additional degree here at the College.  After graduation, I look forward to starting my first year in Medical School at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

What advice would you give to a prospective student or first-year about the MCW experience?

I would say to come with an open mind. You may come in wanting to do everything in Biophysics and end up in Microbiology. Also, find out what kind of learner you are. Making the transition to graduate school can be difficult and it helps to know how you study best.
