Osseointegrated Implant
Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA)

  • Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA)Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA)Requires surgical placement of an osseointegrated implant into the bone directly behind the ear (recommended age:  5 years or older).

  • This device is effective for the following conditions:
    • Conductive or mixed hearing loss secondary to surgery, trauma, infection, or congenital malformations (i.e. atresia, microtia)

    • Unilateral deafness (as may occur following removal of an acoustic neuroma or other skull based tumors)

  • The hearing aid may be attached to the implant after surgical healing has occurred (approximately 3 months after surgery).

  • Assistive listening device options are available.

Auditory Brainstem Implant (auditory prosthesis - not a hearing aid)

  • Designed to provide sound information to individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) who will become deaf after the removal of bilateral tumors from the auditory (hearing) nerves.

  • Although cochlear implants are not hearing aids, these auditory prosthesis are able to restore a significant amount of hearing to patients with severe to profound hearing loss.
  • Our cochlear implant program is among the top 5% nationwide, for the number of people receiving cochlear implants.

Middle Ear Implants

  • Middle ear implants are attached to the middle ear bones to enhance their vibration
  • All middle-ear implants currently available still have external devices that look similar to a behind-the-ear or in-the-ear hearing aid.
  • Impovement on this device is pending, therefore we are not recommending the device at this time.
