About the Division of Health and Society

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Division of Health and Society was created in July 2008 and is the newest of four divisions in the Department of Population Health.  Other divisions within this department are Bioethics, Biostatistics and Epidemiology.

The Division of Health and Society houses the nation’s only PhD Program in Public and Community Health. This Program is  focused on community-based participatory research.

The Division manages the bidirectional Community Engagement Key Function of the Medical College Clinical and Translational Science Institute. As part of this, the Division offers consulting services for academics striving to engage as citizen scientists (community-based participatory research methods and analysis procedures, measurement issues, dissemination of scientific discoveries, best practices, linguistic and cultural adaptation of methodologies that will improve the capacity of researchers to conduct research in multi-cultural settings, evaluation techniques, training of future scientists) and guidance for community members striving to engage as scientific citizens (assets and needs assessment, advocacy, empowerment models, active participation, and program evaluation).
