All users must present a valid Medical College of Wisconsin Libraries borrower's card in order to borrow material from any MCW Library. Eligible borrowers include all faculty, staff, and students at MCW, employees of Froedtert Hospital, employees of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and private health care professionals. Limited reciprocal borrowing privileges exist between MCW Libraries and select institutions of higher education in Milwaukee. There is a special fee structure that applies to corporate for-profit users of MCW Libraries. All other private users may use the library on-site at no charge, but have borrowing privileges only after payment of a $35 annual user's fee.
Most books circulate for 4 weeks. Books on loan may be renewed on or before the due date, and may be renewed an additional 5 times.
The Todd Wehr Library's print journal collection has been moved to an off-campus location, so items do not circulate. Items from print journals may be requested via our Library on Request system. Articles will be scanned and delivered electronically.
A/V materials circulate for 2 hours, 4 hours, 24 hours, or 4 days depending on the item. AV items may be returned in the bookdrop.
Reserve Books and Materials:
Faculty and staff involved in teaching activities may place books and other materials on reserve to make them available to the largest possible number of individuals. Individuals wanting this service should direct their requests to the Circulation Desk at the appropriate library or fill out the online form (MCW network access only). The following guidelines are followed to increase the effectiveness of the reserve collection:
Most Reserve material circulates for 2 hours but other circulation periods do exist.
Some Reserve material may be checked out for overnight use 1 hour before closing and are then due 1 hour after opening the following day. Reserve items may not be returned in the outside bookdrop.
Overdue notices are sent out as a courtesy only and failure to issue or receive a notice does not constitute the basis for altering a fine. All users are subject to overdue fines. Overdue fines which are not paid at the end of the period specified for the type of item will be formally billed to the user for collection. Borrowing privileges will be suspended until the fine is paid. Users who lose or deface a library owned item will be charged the full cost of replacement, plus a processing fee, plus any overdue fine that may exist.
Overdue Fines - All Users:
Books: 10 cents per item per day for up to 28 days. After 28 days, items are considered lost and the user will be billed the cost of replacing the book, the accumulated fine, and a processing fee. The cost of replacing a book which is no longer in print and for which price information is not available is set at a minimum of $100.
Journals: $2.00 per item for the first hour or fraction thereof and 50 cents per item per hour thereafter. After 8 days, items are considered lost and the user will be billed the cost of replacing the item, the accumulated fine, and a processing fee.
Audiovisual Materials: 50 cents per hour per item for up to 8 days. After 8 days, items are considered lost and the user will be billed the cost of replacing the item, the accumulated fine, and a processing fee.
Reserve Materials: 50 cents per hour per item for up to 8 days. After 8 days, items are considered lost and the user will be billed the cost of replacing the item, the accumulated fine, and a processing fee.
Adjustment of bills is made in the event that an item is eventually returned. However, the overdue fine will remain on the bill.
