DSM-5 is now available on PsychiatryOnline
Nov. 21, 2013 - The 2013 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is now available online through the MCW Libraries' subscription to the resource PsychiatryOnline. The DSM has long been a seminal work in the field of psychiatry, and the 4th edition was first published in 1994. The new 5th edition is the work of more than a decade and combines the best scientific evidence, the work of 13 diagnostic work groups composed of experts in the field, and public comments based on early drafts. All of the content and changes from the DSM-4 were verified by independent reviewers appointed by the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Board of Trustees.
In the announcement of the final approval of the 5th edition, Dilip V. Jeste, MD (APA president), Jeffrey A. Lieberman, MD (APA president-elect), James H. Scully Jr., MD (APA medical director and CEO), and David J. Kupfer, MD (chair of the DSM-5 Task Force) stated:
We believe that DSM-5 reflects our best scientific understanding of psychiatric disorders and will optimally serve clinical and public-health needs. Our hope is that the DSM-5 will lead to more accurate diagnoses, better access to mental health services, and improved patient outcomes.
