JoVE Science Education

JoVE, the Journal of Visualized Experiments, is the world's first peer reviewed scientific video journal.  JoVE has recently launched a new database of videos called JoVE Science Education.  The first three sections were launched in 2013.  The fourth section was launched in 2014.  The sections are:

  • General Laboratory Techniques
  • Basic Methods in Cellular and Molecular Biology
  • Model Organisms I: yeast, Drosophila and C. elegans
  • Model Organisms II: mouse, zebrafish and chick

The Science Education database is designed for teaching laboratory fundamentals through simple, easy to understand video demonstrations.  Each section contains fifteen videos.

Model Organisms II is available as a free trial until May 31, 2014.  There are two free videos in each of the other three sections available so that non-subscribers can sample the content.  The free videos are:

  • General Laboratory Techniques:

An Introduction to the Centrifuge

Introduction to the Bunsen Burner

  • Basic Methods in Cellular and Molecular Biology:

DNA Gel Electrophoresis

Bacterial Transformation: The Heat Shock Method

  • Model Organisms I:

Drosophila Development and Reproduction

Caenorhabditis elegans Development and Reproduction

Use an up-to-date browser to access the videos.  Jove Science Education may not function with older browsers such as IE8.

The Science Education database is available as a one-time purchase and an opportunity to purchase the videos at a discount is currently available.  The offer is limited and may not be available in the future.  The Faculty Library Committee is exploring the possibility of cost-sharing in order to purchase this database in FY 13/14.  Depending upon how many sections we would want to purchase, the cost can vary from approximately $25,000 to $60,000.

Please let us know whether this resource appears to be of value for your teaching and learning needs by completing a short survey by April 30, 2014.
