July Displays at Todd Wehr Library
Our three display cases this month complement each other nicely. Visit the library and take a look at all three!
Inside Display – History of Medicine in Wisconsin
See various library materials (from both the regular collection and from the archives) related to the history of medicine in Wisconsin. You may also enjoy taking a look at some of MCW Libraries historical medical devices collection items, including the Brown-Buerger Cystoscope kit, Kidde Dry Ice Apparatus, SpecLight Apparatus and W.A. Baum Baumanometer.
North Display - Summer Reading
The North case features a variety of items from the Todd Wehr Humanities collection. Library Systems Manager Jeff Hagedorn put out some things he personally has read and enjoyed, as well as some that he would like to read. One particularly interesting item is the Physicians, quacks and alchemists : seventeenth century paintings from the Eckhart G. Grohmann Collection at the Milwaukee School of Engineering which is part of a 5 volume set. In addition to visiting the Library display, you can check out more of this enjoyable art collection online!
South Display - Quackery
Quackery is the practice or methods of a person who pretends to possess skill, knowledge, or qualifications he or she does not possess. Quackery is often associated with fraudulent medicines and medical practices from the 18th through early 20th centuries, but quackery still exists today. Come check out our south display case to see what types of quack medicines and procedures were prevalent in the past, how to spot ads for quack medicines, and why people fall for quackery.
Note: most books in any of the display cases are available to check out. Please contact the MCW Libraries for additional information on the resources we can provide on these topics or if you have any questions: firstname.lastname@example.org or 414.955.8302.
