The Hospitals

The following three hospitals are the primary inpatient training sites for our internal medicine residents.  Approximately 60% of an individual residents’ time is spent at Froedtert Hospital, 30% at the VA Medical Center and 10% at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Froedtert Hospital

• A 525 bed tertiary care facility with 4 intensive care units (medical, cardiovascular, surgical and neuroservices)
• The original structure was built in 1980 and many state of the art expansions have taken place.  Most recently, a 9 story North Tower, home to the medical intensive care unit and several additional general medical wards, was added
• A 173,000 square foot Clinical Cancer Center was completed in 2008 that is home to various cancer related clinical programs, a day hospital, outpatient procedure facilities, research facilities and faculty offices
• A level 1 trauma center with 62,045 emergency room visits in 2010
• There were over 680,000 outpatient clinic visits and 27,000 admissions in 2010
• The electronic medical record system EPIC is used throughout all departments

Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center

• A 168 bed regional tertiary care center for VA system, serving patients from Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan
• 2011 saw the completion of a $27 million, 67,000-square-foot, free standing spinal cord injury center immediately adjacent to the acute care facility
• The 125 acre campus is also home to a 113 bed nursing facility and 356 domiciliary beds for individuals involved with substance abuse rehabilitation, psychiatric rehabilitation and post traumatic stress disorder care. 
• The national VA electronic medical record CPRS is utilized with an online order entry system
• Special programs include interventional radiology, cardiac surgery, comprehensive cancer care (including radiation therapy), an extensive telemedicine program, and a Spinal Cord Injury Unit

St. Joseph's Hospital

A 538 bed private hospital, which is the second largest in the city of Milwaukee, and was founded in 1879

• Is a tertiary level teaching hospital affiliated with the Medical College of Wisconsin
• There are over 80,000 ER visits per year in the level III trauma center
• Is known across southeastern Wisconsin for its specialized obstetrics care, as well as its cardiac, oncologic and rehabilitation services
