My research is investigating the differential impact cyclic nucleotides have on mucosal inflammation and epithelial injury repair. These studies utilize cell-culture model systems as a complement to several advanced in vivo methodologies.

Videomicrograph of intestinal epithelium (left side) migrating into an experimentally made wound (right side).  Over 18 hours the untreated cells actively migrate to cover the ulcerated surface (video 1).  Video 2 shows cells that have been treated with a compound typically used to decrease inflammation in patients with colitis.  These data indicate that clinical anti-inflammatory agents prevent epithelial migration and wound healing.
