Dr. Arthur Derse Appointed to AAMC Board of Directors

Arthur R. Derse, MD, JD, director of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities, Julia and David Uihlein Chair in Medical Humanities and professor of bioethics and emergency medicine, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) for a four-year term beginning in November.

Dr. Derse was appointed to the AAMC Board of Directors after being elected chair-elect of the AAMC Council for Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS) Administrative Board. CFAS represents over 193,000 full-time faculty members in U.S. and Canadian medical schools.

Dr. Derse will serve two years as chair-elect of CFAS, two years as chair and then two years as past-chair. He will maintain his position on the AAMC Board of Directors during his four years as chair-elect and chair of the CFAS board.

Dr. Derse represents the Association of Bioethics Program Directors (ABPD), a constituent academic society, in the AAMC’s Council for Faculty and Academic Societies.

MCW has been well represented on the AAMC Board of Directors in recent years. Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Provost, Executive Vice President and the Julia A. Uihlein, MA, Dean of the School of Medicine, served as chair-elect, chair and immediate past chair of the AAMC Board of Directors from 2018-2021. Dr. Kerschner previously served as chair of the AAMC Council of Deans.
