Medical School awards Outstanding Medical Student Teacher Award to a number of our faculty and residents for the 2010-2011 academic year

November 11, 2011

The College’s Curriculum and Evaluation Committee (CEC) awarded Outstanding Medical School Teacher to 234 faculty members as well as a letter of commendation recognizing their excellence in teaching during the 2010-2011 academic year. The recipients in Obstetrics and Gynecology include Jonathan Berkoff, MD (St. Mary's), Elizabeth Hill-Karbowski, CNM (St. Joseph's), David Hoogerland, MD (St. Mary's), Matthew Lee, MD (St. Joseph's), Seema Menon, MD, Anna Palatnik, MD (PGYIII), Elizabeth Thompson, MD (PGYII), Suzanne Walczak, MD, Nichole Wiepert, MD (PGYIII). Paul Robb, MD received the award for Human Development. Seema Menon, MD received the award for Reproductive Medicine for the longitude patient panel.


Paul Lemen, MD, Associate Professor and Residency Director, received the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) 2011 National Faculty Award.

This award is given to Faculty for excellence in resident education.


Jessica Crawford, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology resident, received the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) special excellence in endoscopic procedures award.

Kathy A King, MD, Assistant Professor, received the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Excellence in Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to undergraduate medical education.

The APGO Excellence in Teaching Award was established in 1992 to recognize outstanding teachers in ob-gyn medical education. Over 1,500 physician educators have received this prestigious award since its inception.


Anna Palatnik, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology resident, received the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals (MCWAH) Research Award

Each year in May, MCWAH awards a $500 award for research presented or published during the 2010-2011 academic year. Anna Livshits, MD, presented her research "What is the Optimal Follicular Size in Intra-Uterine Insemination Cycles with Ovulation Induction with Clomiphene Citrate or Letrozole?" at the 15th McGill Symposium on Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility and Women’s Health, Thirty Years of Advances in Reproductive Endocrinology and ART: A Celebratory Congress Centre Mont-Royal in Montreal, Canada on May 27-31, 2011. She will also present her research project at our annual Resident Research and Alumni Day on June 22.

Recipients were nominated by their Program Directors and chosen by an 11-member selection committee. The awards were sponsored by MCWAH.

The recipients in Obstetrics and Gynecology include Mary Burke, MD (Lincoln Ave), Curtis Cornella-Carlson (St. Joseph's), MD, Dobie Giles, MD (St. Mary's), Michael Gilman, MD (St. Joseph's), Sumana Koduri, MD, Jazmin Parcon, MD (St. Mary's), Kristy Kapfhamer, MD, Matt Loichinger, MD, Clarissa Weiss, MD. Dr. Koduri also receive the Teaching Award for Clinical Human Anatomy. Paul Robb, MD received the award for Human Development. Raj Narayan, MD received the award for Clinical Educator Pathway. Timothy Klatt, MD and Estil Y. Strawn, MD received the award for Master Clinician Pathway.


Dr. Dwight P. Cruikshank received the 2010 Milwaukee Academy of Medicine Distinguished Achievement Award

On Tuesday, November 16, Dwight P. Cruikshank was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award while attending the Milwaukee Academy of Medicine meeting. Dr. Matthew Lee presented the award to him in recognizing his leadership, professional, acumen, and kindness. Dr. Cruikshank then went on to deliver his fascinating talk, "40 Years of Obstetrics and Gynecology". Many kind words were voiced.


American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) Robotic Technology Award given to Dobie Giles, MD

This award was established to recognize those members who are exploring the use of robotics in gynecologic surgery. Although only a few years old, this award has captured some of our most innovative research and honors the spirit for which the competition was established.

On Wednesday, June 30, Managed Health Services recognized the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the

2010 Excellence in Obstetric Care Award. Paul Sabin, vice president of Network Management & Development at MHS presented Vanessa Barnabei, M.D., Ph.D., director of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin with this award. The physicians at the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology have provided excellent quality of care to MHS members in the OB category (i.e., 17P utilization, notification of pregnancy, cesarean section delivery rate).

“The satisfaction of our members is important to us. Based upon positive feedback from members and their case managers regarding the quality of care they received by these providers, assisted in the determination of the winner for this quality award”, says Paul Sabin.

MHS commends the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for their dedication and quality of care they provide to our members. The award is one of two awards presented each year by MHS. The award is sponsored by the Centene Foundation.


Jessica Crawford named the first recipient of the Jessica S. Lin Award for Clinical Excellence

On June 16, 2010, Obstetrics and Gynecology resident Jessica Crawford, MD, was been named the first recipient of the Jessica S. Lin Award for Clinical Excellence by a Resident Physician. This award recognizes an individual entering the final year of residency training for his/her outstanding clinical and academic performance.

Paul Lemen, MD, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Ob/Gyn Residency Program Director, nominated Dr. Crawford, calling her “the ideal physician and teacher.”

The award is presented by Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, Inc. (MCWAH). It was established this year in memory of Dr. Jessica Lin, a highly regarded MCW Neurosurgery resident who died accidentally in February.

Grant Sinson, MD, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and the Neurosurgery Residency Program Director, presented the award to Dr. Crawford during the Froedtert Hospital medical staff annual meeting on June 10. As part of the honor, Dr. Crawford received $500 and a reserved parking spot.


The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Community Service Award is received by Fredrik Broekhuizen, MD

This award is given to Junior Fellows or Fellows of the College from one or more ACOG districts who have performed outstanding community service. Award recipients receive a $500 honorarium and free registration to attend the College's Annual Clinical Meeting. This year's awards went to Fredrik F. Broekhuizen, MD -- Professor of ob-gyn, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee (ACOG District VI). It was presented during the 58th Annual Clinical Meeting of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, held at the Moscone Center, May 15 through May 19, 2010.

On June 3, 2010, Jessica A. Crawford, MD, resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology received the MCWAH (Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, Inc). Housestaff Award for Excellence in Teaching. Recipients of this award are housestaff (residents and fellows) who have been recognized by the senior class and graduate medical education program directors for their outstanding contributions to the education of medical students.


Ernest O. Henschel Clinical Teaching Award was received by Michael Lund, MD, Associate Professor.
