Dr. Anne Z. Hoch
joined the department as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Physical Medical and Rehabilitation in July, 1997. She graduated from Marquette University in Physical Therapy in 1987. She received her medical degree from Michigan State University in 1992 and then completed her internship at Northwestern University/Evanston Hospital with a concentration in internal medicine.

She returned to Milwaukee for her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency (1993 - 1996) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She then returned to Northwestern University (1996 - 1997) for her fellowship in sports medicine.

Dr. Hoch's practice involves acute sports medicine injuries with emphasis on the female athlete, female athletic injuries, and running injuries. She performs fluoroscopically guided epidural steroid injections, facet injections, and sacroiliac injections as part of the treatment for spinal pain. She also performs EMGs for sport and spine related conditions. 

Dr. Hoch's research area is in exercise physiology and female athletes. She recently published an article in JAMA concerning energy expenditure with indoor exercise machines. Her research during her Fellowship concentrated on aerobic fitness in women with non-radicular low back pain. Her current research project is examining the effects of amenorrhea on female runners and its effect on bone and cardiovascular health.

Awards and honors include the New Investigator Award funded by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Education and Research Foundation for her project entitled "Aerobic Fitness in Women with Non-radicular Low Back Pain." She was also awarded the Best Research Paper in a Peer Review Journal at the annual Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Academy meeting in October, 1996. She was Intern of the Year at Northwestern University in 1993 and served as chief resident in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Hoch is the team physician for Mt. Mary College, Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, Milwaukee Lutheran High School, the U.S. National Speedskating Team, and a consulting physician for the Milwaukee Ballet.
