Dr. Gregory J. Schmeling joined the Orthopaedic Department in 1992 as an assistant professor and director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Division. He became an associate professor and interim program director in 1996 and in 1997 he was named residency program director. In the 1993-1994 & the 1998-1999 academic years, he was named the Outstanding Clinical Instructor of the Year.

After graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree from Marquette University in 1979, Dr. Schmeling attended the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and earned his doctor of medicine degree in 1984. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1989. He completed an orthopaedic traumatology fellowship at the University of South Florida School of Medicine, as well as an AO international fellowship in Bochum, Germany and in Chur, Switzerland. Dr. Schmeling became board certified in 1993 and Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1995. His prior academic experience includes service as an instructor in the Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Department at Loyola University Medical Center and at Hines VA. Hospital, Maywood, Illinois, from 1990 to 1992.

Dr. Schmeling is a member of the AO Alumni Association, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Mid-American Orthopaedic Association, Wisconsin Orthopaedic Society, Milwaukee Orthopaedic Society, and Milwaukee Academy of Medicine. He is President-Elect of the Wisconsin Orthopaedic Society. He is currently a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and is a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Orthopaedics, the Journal of the Orthopaedic Trauma, and the Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection, and Critical Care.

Dr. Schmeling is active surgical staff at Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee, WI; associate surgical staff at West Allis Memorial Hospital, West Allis, WI; surgical staff at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, Waukesha, WI; and courtesy surgical staff at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI.

Dr. Schmeling's specialty interests include orthopaedic trauma and post traumatic musculoskeletal infections. Dr. Schmeling will see any patient with a musculoskeletal condition on an urgent basis. His current clinical and research interests include pelvic and acetabular fractures, management of the polytraumatized patient, biomechanics of the fracture fixation, and antibiotics and open fractures.
