The Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship Program is ACGME accredited. The one-year fellowship offers extensive exposure to pathologies and disorders involving the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder in children and adults. The fellow will gain a broad experience in operative and nonoperative management in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin and at two affiliated private practices in Milwaukee.

The fellow will be an integral part of the upper extremity service at a large academic center working closely with the Division’s faculty, residents, and students. While in the community, the fellow will work on a one-to-one basis with the private practice faculty. The fellow will be expected to successfully complete a 40-hour microsurgical course at the Medical College of Wisconsin, attend all hand and upper extremity conferences, and facilitate the bimonthly Journal Club. The fellow will be required to complete a research paper of publishable quality in basic and/or clinical research. Upon successful completion of the fellowship program, the fellow will be qualified to sit for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Hand Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) exam.

Requirements

To be eligible, the following requirements must have been met:

  • Completed an accredited Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program

  • Eligible for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

  • Eligible for or hold a State of Wisconsin Medical License

You will need to register with the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) for the Combined Musculoskeletal Matching Program (CMMP).

Roger A. Daley, MD, PhDRoger A. Daley, MD, PhD (Program Director)
Dr. Roger Daley is a graduate of SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine with a MD and PhD in Anatomical Sciences. He completed his Orthopaedic Residency and Fellowship in Hand, Upper Extremity, and Microvascular Surgery at Brown University in Rhode Island. He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Daley is an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Daley’s academic appointments include: Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin; Associate Professor, Department of Plastic Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin; Director of the Hand, Upper Extremity, and Microsurgery Division, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin; Clinical Director, Microsurgery Laboratory, and Program Director, Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Dr. Roger Daley, Clinical Director for the Microsurgery Laboratory, is involved in several projects which include the development of a mouse free flap model, the development of a transplant model and currently is involved with a bone regenerate project and thrombosis model. With his interest in anatomy, he studies various structural entities as they pertain to the hand and upper extremity via cadaveric dissections and biomechanical testing and then relating the findings to clinical settings.


Steven I. Grindel, MDSteven I. Grindel, MD
Dr. Steven Grindel is a graduate of the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine. He completed his Orthopaedic Residency at the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics and his Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at Loma Linda University in California. He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Grindel is an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Grindel’s academic appointments include: Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin; Director, Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Extremity Center, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin; and Associate Director, Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Dr. Steven Grindel is involved in numerous studies evaluating the biomechanical properties of orthopaedic implants. He is also involved in assessing the clinical outcomes of rotator cuff surgery, shoulder arthritis surgery, and rehabilitation after rotator cuff surgery. A number of his projects have been accepted for presentation and publication.


Rick F. Papandrea, MDRick F. Papandrea, MD
Dr. Rick Papandrea is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, School of Medicine, Madison, Wisconsin. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Mt. Sinai, Cleveland, Ohio and his Fellowship in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery at Harvard, Boston, Massachusetts as well as a Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Reconstruction at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Papandrea is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. He is an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Papandrea is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Dr. Papandrea is investigating the use of primary hemi-arthroplasty for management of traumatic distal humerus fractures. He has investigated outcomes for latissimus transfers for irreparable rotator cuff tears for severe rotator cuff.

 

Dean W. Ziegler, MDDean W. Ziegler, MD
Dr. Dean Ziegler is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, School of Medicine, Madison, Wisconsin. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle. Dr. Ziegler is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and is an active member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. Dr Ziegler is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Dr. Dean Ziegler is investigating the use of diagnostic ultrasound for the evaluation and management of rotator cuff disorders, the natural history of rotator cuff repair, and the management of the subscapularis in total shoulder arthroplasty.
