PALLIATIVE CARE CENTER: WHAT DID WE DO IN 2006?

 

  • Completed a strategic planning process for 2007
  • Developed a personal-team commitment statement
  • Completed three intra-team communication workshops
  • Saw ~720 new inpatients and 160 new outpatients
  • Supervised 5 M4 students for a month-long Palliative Care rotation
  • Supervised 6 residents for a month-long Palliative Care rotation
  • Hosted 10 visiting nurses for a three day preceptorship
  • Hosted 5 visiting physicians for a two-three day preceptorship
  • Hosted a pre-doctoral psychology student for a 9 month PC experience
  • Hosted the VA Palliative Care Psychology fellow for one month.
  • Started a third clinical service: outpatient palliative care
  • Started a new MD orientation program--12 new MCW/FH physicians were oriented to palliative care and hospital/state policies/regulations
  • Successfully graduated two palliative care fellows
  • Successfully launched two new palliative care fellows
  • Successfully recruited one new PC fellow for 2007
  • Successfully recruited one new palliative care physician
  • Successfully recruited one new part-time palliative care nurse
  • Coordinated the 7th annual community nursing Palliative Care Board Review course
  • Provided ~275 hours of direct instructional time to MCW/FH trainees
  • Coordinated the first FH ELNEC training for staff nurses
  • Co-Directed the M2 Course: Medical Ethics and Palliative Medicine
  • Directed the M3 Palliative Care experience in the Ambulatory Medicine clerkship
  • Directed the M4 Clinical Palliative Care elective
  • Completed planning and implementation for six Schwartz Rounds
  • Successfully obtained matching funds for the first of a three year CAPC extension grant
  • Edited and published 24 new Fast Facts and Concepts
  • Revised and updated 50 existing Fast Facts and Concepts
  • Completed a pilot project of clinic PC integration
  • Obtained office space for Jo Weis
  • Hosted staff from 18 hospitals to learn how to start a palliative care program
  • Received a major financial donation in support of the 4NW Doucette Family Room
  • Started Oncology Fellow-Palliative Care Supervision Project
  • Provided ongoing ICU nurse palliative care orientation
  • Provided Radiation Oncology technologist palliative care teaching
  • Supervised clinical training for ICU palliative care nursing position
  • Started Hospitalist-Palliative Care-emergency Department Palliative Care pathway initiative
  • Began recruitment for a 2007 Faculty development course in palliative care.
  • Launched new data management computer program
  • Began monthly tracking of hospital cost savings
  • Provided leadership for the MCW Society of Teaching Scholars, Medical Humanities Program, Faculty Career Development Committee, and Health Care Products Industry Committees.
  • Provided leadership for the Froedtert Hospital Pain, Ethics, Palliative Care, ICU,  and P &T committees.
  • Provided leadership for committees in the American Academic of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing Association, Center to Advance Palliative Care, HPM Fellowship Directors Association, and the Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
  • Provided leadership to the formation of a SE Wisconsin HPNA chapter.
  • Served as advisor on external grants from UCSD, Baptist Health Care System, and Rush-Presbyterian Medical Center, Bureau of Health Professions.
