History

The Palliative Care Center was founded in 1993 as one of the first Academic Palliative Care programs in the United States, combining clinical care, education, research, and community outreach.  The Center is based in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  A timeline of key program benchmarks includes:

1993      Palliative Care Consultation Service

1997      Founding home for the Journal of Palliative Medicine

1999      Palliative Care Inpatient Unit

1999      Palliative Care Outpatient Clinic

2002      Palliative Care Fellowship

2003      Designation as one of six Palliative Care Leadership Centers (CAPC)

2005      "Circle of Life Award", American Hospital Association

2006      Palliative Care Fellowship Accreditation

2007      Designation as one of eight training sites for the AAHPM Clinical Scholars Program
