Dr. Markelova graduated from medical school at the First Medical Institute I.P. Pavlov, St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1987. Following training in orthopedics and microsurgery, she completed her residency training in pathology at the Hennepin County Medical Center (affiliated with the University of Minnesota) in Minneapolis, MN. This was followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology at the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT, and a year of fellowship in Cytopathology at the Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT. She was appointed Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in September, 2005.
Dr. Markelova's main interests lie in the surgical pathology of head and neck tumors including thyroid, salivary glands and parathyroid neoplasms, and in fine needle aspiration cytology.
