Vascular malformations arise due to localized developmental errors of blood or lymph vessels. These include capillary malformation, venous malformation, arteriovenous malformation and lymphatic malformation. Conditions like these are benign but severe and at times can be indicator of further clinical complications such as Sturge-Weber syndrome, Cobb syndrome, etc. I am interested in understanding the endothelial cell function / dysfunction in these anomalies in terms of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity and apoptosis. Expression of catabolic enzymes such as indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) in infantile hemangiomas could generate metabolites that are highly toxic to the local environment that might contribute to damaged endothelium and accelerated apoptosis. My research focuses on the signaling events involved in regulation of these metabolites and the interrelationship between eNOS and IDO.
In collaboration with Dr. Paula North, M.D. Ph.D., I am developing infantile hemangiomas biomarker screening and clinical diagnostic assays.
In my other role as Imaging Specialist, I teach microscopy and provide hands on training for CRI-Imaging core users. As part of the training, I advise on experimental design, sample preparation, acquiring, processing and analyzing data. The core houses bright field, fluorescence, confocal, 2 photon confocal, laser micro dissection, Laser scanning cytometry and NanoZoomer scanner. The facility enables acquisition of high quality 2D, 3D, 4D and 5D images and quantify by several methods with high levels of accuracy. This is an open to all, fee-per use core facility located at CRI 4th floor.
