Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital

Surgical Pathology specimens annually: 22,000

The principle teaching hospital of the Medical College of Wisconsin, FMLH attracts patients from Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and Upper Michigan.  This tertiary care hospital has the only Level I Trauma Center in Eastern Wisconsin.  It is also a major solid organ and bone marrow transplant hospital and referral center.  The pathology laboratory is a Labcore regional referral center.  In addition to tertiary care material the lab processes approximately 9,000 outpatient specimens, providing the resident with a broad spectrum of material to examine. 


Children's Hospital of Wisconsin

Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is the 16th pediatric hospital to be established in the United States.  Admissions average more than 19,000 per year – the second highest of any pediatric hospital in the U.S.  About 180,000 children per year are seen in the hospital's more than 80 clinics.  Children's Hospital is home to the largest regional pediatric program for the repair of congenital heart defects and is Wisconsin's only regional pediatric trauma referral center.


Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center delivers primary, secondary and tertiary medical care in 182 acute care operating beds.  It is also one of the leading telepathology sites for the Veterans Affairs Administration.  The Medical Center is located in the heart of Milwaukee metroplex and four miles from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  One of the busiest VA Medical Centers in the country, this hospital is one of the regional specialized surgery centers for the Midwest. 


Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office is the medicolegal death investigation entity serving Milwaukee County, a mixed urban and suburban jurisdiction, including Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and 18 surrounding municipal units.  Milwaukee County has a population of approximately one million, and comprises a geographic area of over 200 square miles.  Each year the office investigates 3,500 cases, and assumes jurisdiction in approximately 2,100 cases.  Autopsies are performed on about 50% of these cases.  The ME office also serves as a major forensic pathology resource for a portion of southeastern Wisconsin, generating an additional 250-300 autopsies from other death investigation jurisdictions.  The Medical Examiner's facility is modern and well equipped with an in-house toxicology laboratory. 


Blood Center of Wisconsin

At the Blood Center of Wisconsin headquarters, residents are tutored in the aspects of blood bank management, including donor recruiting and qualification, inventory management, component manufacturing, typing and cross-matching, quality control, and product release.  Residents also have the opportunity to rotate through one or more of the diagnostic laboratories to obtain in-depth bench training in hemostasis, tissue typing and molecular diagnostics.
