Intern Profiles

 
Dustin
Anderson

Dustin was born in Cedar City, Utah, received a B.A. in German from Southern Utah University and an M.D. from the University of Utah.  During medical school, Dustin was the Co-president of the Utah Rural Outreach Program, which organized visits by medical students to encourage high school students to pursue careers in health care.  He was a member of the Pediatric Interest Group, participated in a health service expedition to Peru, and was a member of the medical school admissions interview committee.  He also received funding to pursue and present research where he studied the nutritional status of chronically ventilated lambs.  Dustin is a marathon runner, speaks fluent German, plays the saxophone, has recorded 2 CDs with a Ska band, and also enjoys time with his young son and daughter.


 
Hena Arora

Hena was born in Doncaster, England, grew up in Chicago, and received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois-Chicago and an M.D. from Rush Medical College.  Hena has been a volunteer with the Big Sib/Little Sib Program at her medical school and volunteered extensively at several community health clinics, including coordinating fundraising and administrative activities.  Hena is fluent in French and Hindi, and enjoys playing sports.

 


 


Gina Bane 

Gina was born in Des Moines, Iowa and grew up in Dewitt, Michigan.  Gina received a B.S. in Biochemistry and an M.D. from the the University of Michigan.  Between her undergraduate years and medical school, Gina spent one year as a research assistant investigating cholecystokinin gene expression and gastrin-deficiency, work that resulted in two publications.  As a medical student, Gina was the chairperson of Global REACH, an organization that helped create a database of contacts for students interested in global health, and she also volunteered at a clinic for the homeless.  As an undergraduate, Gina was the editor of a campus-wide Asian-American publication.  Gina enjoys Kung Fu, traveling, snowboarding, and running.



Jessica
Bowman

Jessica is a native of Milwaukee, and received a B.S. in Genetics and an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Jessica was a member of the Pediatric Interest Group and volunteered at a cat shelter, where she cared for the cats and assisted with their adoptions.  As an undergraduate, Jessica did research on the thrombospondin gene of Drosophila melanogaster, and the potential cardiovascular and anti-thrombotic benefits of consuming onions.  She also worked as a research assistant at MCW for two summers studying Type 2 von Willebrand disease.  Jessica enjoys traveling, reading, hiking, cooking, and shopping.



Gayathri Chelvakumar

Gayathri was born in Glendale, California and raised in Fullerton, California.  She received a B.A. in Biology and Religion and an M.D. from Northwestern University.  During medical school, Gayathri performed research on playground safety, specifically investigating ways to improve supervision and decrease children's risk-taking behaviors
on playgrounds.  Gayathri also was a volunteer at a free clinic, a summer camp counselor, an Indian Classical Dance choreographer and performer for the Fusion Cultural Show, which raised money for local outreach clinics, and the producer for her medical school's annual comedy show.  She was the treasurer of the South Asian Medical Student Association.  She speaks and writes French, and enjoys Indian dancing, movies, and reading.



Joanne
Claveria

Joanne was born in Chicago and received a B.A. in Biological Sciences and an M.D. from Northwestern University.  During medical school, Joanne helped organize dance classes for the Chicago Youth Program, was a member of the Pediatric Interest Group, founded the Infectious Disease Clinic Shadowing Program at Children's Memorial Hospital, and was a choreographer and performer for the annual variety show.  Joanne also volunteered at a free clinic and with presenting health topics to middle school students.  Joanne speaks Spanish and enjoys dancing, knitting, playing the piano, and describes herself as a dedicated vegetarian and arts enthusiast.



Kimberly
Cronsell

Kimberly was born in Atlanta, and received a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Montana and an M.D. from Loyola University of Chicago.  Kimberly has been a peer mentor for other medical students, volunteered at a free clinic, has traveled to rural villages in Guatemala to provide medical care, and raised funds for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago by running the Chicago marathon.  As an undergraduate, Kimberly participated in research on the impact of domestic violence on women and children.  Kimberly is interested in ballroom dancing, traveling, and fishing.



Paula
Cody

Paula is a native of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and received a B.S. in Psychology and Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  During medical school, Paula was the president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, a member of the Pediatric Interest Group, a member of the yearbook committee, and a volunteer at the Saturday free clinic.  Between her undergraduate years and medical school, Paula worked for a year as a Telemetry technician and patient care assistant at Aurora Sinai Medical Center.  Paula enjoys volleyball, traveling, reading, theater, and concerts.



Nga Dinh

Nga was born in Vietnam and lived there until the age of 8, when her family emigrated to Thailand and eventually settled in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Nga received a B.S. in Biochemistry and an M.D. from the University of Nebraska.  Nga was the secretary for her medical school's chapter of the American Medical Women's Association, was a teaching assistant for a first-year history and physical examination course, and coordinated the Perinatal Club, which was a program pairing students with expectant mothers.  Nga also volunteered at a free clinic, and was a member of the Aging Interest Group.  Nga is fluent in Vietnamese and enjoys biking, cooking, and traveling.



Kathryn
Farwell

Kathryn is a native of Milwaukee and received a B.S. in Molecular Biology and an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Since graduating from medical school in 2006, Kathryn has spent the last year caring for her now 16 month-old daughter.  In medical school, Kathryn was the Co-leader of the Pediatric Interest Group, organized a conference for high school girls interested in careers in health care, and volunteered at free clinics.  She previously has worked as a phlebotomist and during one summer, did some research on the sensitivity of the rapid streptococcal antigen test.  Kathryn enjoys knitting, reading, and traveling.



Carrie
Fathke

Carrie was born in Pensacola, Florida and received a B.A. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of California-Santa Cruz and an M.D. from the University of Washington.  In the six years between undergraduate school and medical school, Carrie was an environmental technician testing soil and water quality, and participated in research on the genetics of Drosophila for 2 years and on wound healing for 3 years.  Carrie has 4 publications and several abstracts, and has presented at several national plastic surgery meetings.  In medical school, Carrie was the chairperson of the Pediatric Interest Group.  Carrie is fluent in German and enjoys hiking, French culture, reading, and Native American culture.



Matthew
Gray

Matthew was born in Indianapolis and received a B.A. in Biology from Lawrence University and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  Between undergraduate school and medical school, Matt spent a year in a research laboratory where he established a technique to measure the intraocular pressure of zebra fish eyes and developing a zebra fish model for human glaucoma.  Matt's research has resulted in one publication and several abstracts.  During medical school, Matt volunteered at the Saturday free clinic and with the Red Cross during Hurricane Katrina.  Matt enjoys soccer, camping, backpacking and saltwater reef keeping.



Leyla
Hamizadeh

Leyla is a native of Milwaukee and received a B.S. in Biology from Marquette University and an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Leyla was a member of the Pediatric Interest Group, volunteered at free clinics, and helped to interview medical school applicants.  Leyla has particpated in a research project exploring a novel technique of tunneled catheter placement in patients with renal disease.  Leyla speaks Spanish and Croatian and enjoys reading, biking, and traveling.



Allison Jay

Allison was born in Augusta, Georgia and received a B.S. in Preprofessional Science from the University of Notre Dame and an M.D. from the University of Chicago.  Allison spent the year between undergraduate school and medical school as a Fulbright Scholar in Cyprus, where she studied the genetics of atherosclerosis.    Allison also has previously done research at Loyola University on heparin and other anticoagulants, which has resulted in several publications.  Allison enjoys running, music, and international health.



Elizabeth
Kessler

Elizabeth was born in Hinsdale, Illinois and received a B.A. in Preprofessional Psychology from the University of Notre Dame and an M.D. from Loyola University.  Elizabeth was the treasurer of her medical school's chapter of the American Women's Medical Association, has traveled to Guatemala to provide medical care, and has volunteered with Special Friends, an organization that provides support to children with cancer.  Elizabeth was also a member of her church choir, and has previously done research in a V.A. urology laboratory.  Elizabeth enjoys running, cooking, movies, and concerts.



Heather Kleczewski

Heather is a native of Neenah, Wisconsin and received a B.S. in Biology from Carroll College and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  Heather was the president of the Family Medicine Student Association, volunteered at the Satruday free clinic, was an interviewer and tour guide for the medical school's admissions committee, and a CPR instructor.  Heather has done research as an undergraduate on the effect of exercise training on hypertensive rats.  Heather enjoys reading, Milwaukee professional sports, stock car racing, and musical theatre.



Maren Miller

Maren was born in Milwaukee and received a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Marquette University and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  Maren was a member of the American Medical Student Association, the American Women's Medical Association, and the Pediatric Interest Group.  Maren also volunteered at the Satruday free clinic, and with Friendship Bridge, an organization that provides business loans to women in Guatemala.  Maren is also a former Child Life volunteer at Children's Hospital.  Maren enjoys reading, exercising, and outdoor activities.



Phillip Minar

Phil was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, grew up with 11 siblings, and received a B.A. in Psychology from Duquesne University and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  Between undergraduate and medical school, Phil was a research assistant at the University of Chicago studying the psychology of twins.  Phil was a member of the Pediatric Interest Group and the Family Practice Student Association.  Phil also volunteered at the Saturday free clinic, as a Dialysis Buddy at Children's Hospital, and in the nursing offices of local elementary schools.  Phil enjoys carpentry, landscaping, outdoor activities, writing, photography, and editing home movies.


 
Laura Norton

Laura was born in Atlanta,Georgia, and received a B.A. in Biology and Theology from the University of Saint Thomas and an M.D. from the University of Minnesota.  Laura was a class representative to her medical school's Student Council and the Chair of the Medical School Commencement Planning Committee.  Laura also was a teaching assistant for the Gross Anatomy course, the education coordinator for Medical Students for Choice, and has done research on the response of tissue factor to endotoxemia.  Laura has been the author of two publications and one abstract.  Laura enjoys running, basketball, volleyball, and traveling.



Teresa Vandenbergh

Teresa was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and received a B.S. in Biology from Grand Valley State University and an M.D. from Wayne State University.  Teresa has been a member of the American Medical Student Association and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, with a weekend retreat for disabled children, and with Project H, an organization that provides services for homeless families.  Teresa speaks German and enjoys soccer, dancing, reading, playing the trumpet, cooking, and traveling.


  

 
Shihtien
Wang

Shihtien was born in Taiwan and received a B.A. in Biological Sciences and an M.D. from Northwestern University.  Shihtien has been a member of the American Medical Student Association, and has volunteered with the Chicago Chinatown Health Fair, and at several free clinics.  Shihtien has previously done research on the effect of JNK kinase on human neuroblastoma cells and has been an author on two publications.  Shihtien is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese, and enjoys playing the piano, classical music, sewing and knitting, reading Chinese literature, and gardening.


   

  
Kristen Wasilowski

Kristen was born in Oak Lawn, Illinois and received a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Marquette University and an M.D. from Creighton University.  Kristen was the Vice President of her school's chapter of the American Medical Women's Association and a member of the American Medical Student Association.  She was also selected to be a member of Creighton's MSPE Task Force where she helped develop the school's policy for ranking students.  Kristen was the Wellness Co-Chair of the medical school's student government, and a tour guide and interviewer for the medical school's Admissions Committee.  Kristen enjoys Bikram yoga, exercising, and sports.



Internal Medicine/Pediatrics

Hiba Bashir

Hiba was born in Milwaukee and received a B.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  During medical school, Hiba was the president of the Islamic Medical Association and the co-founder of the annual Medical Cultural Enrichment Workshop.  Hiba also was the treasurer of the Partnership for Urban Medical and Educational Advancement, a member of the Family Practice Students Association, and volunteered at the Saturday free clinic and at an Islamic community center.  Hiba enjoys cooking and baking, reading, and traveling.



Katherine Burrows

Katherine was born in Neenah, Wisconsin and received a B.A. in Biology from Augustana College and a D.O from Des Moines University.  During medical school, Katherine was the president of her school's chapter of Sigma Sigma Phi, an honorary and service organization.  Katherine was also an interviewer for the admissions committee, a laboratory teaching assistant,  a peer tutor, a Big Sib volunteer, the treasurer of the Emergency Medicine Club, a member of the Graduation Committee, and a volunteer at a free clinic.  Katherine enjoys running, lifting weights, and reading.



Douglas Connor

Douglas was born in Dubuque, Iowa and received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  Douglas has been a member of Physicans for Social Responsibility, the American Medical Student Association, and the American Association of Family Practitioners.  Douglas has volunteered at the Saturday free clinic and has done research on the effects of sleep deprivation on muscle tissue.  As an undergraduate, Doug was an All-American in Track and Field, and continues to enjoy running, as well as basketball and traveling.



Matthew Ehrhardt

Matthew was born in Pontiac, Illinois and received a B.S. in Bioengineering from the University of Illinois and an M.D. from the University of Illinois-Peoria.  Matthew is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, was the co-chair of the Student Advocate/Mentoring Program, a class representative to his medical school's student government, and the president of the Pediatric Interest Group.  As an undergraduate, Matthew did research on mapping the porcine genome and was an Emergency Medical Technician.  Matthew enjoys restoring antique automobiles, softball, playing the guitar, drawing, and skiing.



Stephen Malcolm
 

Stephen was born in Oak Lawn, Illinois and received a B.A. in Chemistry and History from Knox College and an M.D. from the University of Illinois-Chicago.  Stephen is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, was a steering committee member of the Internal Medicine Interest Group, a volunteer at a free clinic, a tutor for first and second-year medical students, and has previously worked as a phlebotomist and as a physical therapy aide.  Stephen was very active as a disc jockey for his college radio station.  He speaks Spanish, and enjoys backpacking, running, weight-lifting, traveling, and reading Russian literature. 



Naima
Rehman

Naima was born in Bay City, Michigan and received a B.S. in Human Biology from Michigan State University and an M.D. from the University of Michigan.  During medical school, Naima has been a member of the Muslim Students' Association and has volunteered with the University of Michigan Hospital's Muslim Volunteer Services.  Naima also was an organizer of a religions discussion group, and volunteered at a free clinic.  Naima speaks Punjabi and Urdu and enjoys Asian and Middle Eastern cooking, acrylic painting, drawing, and sculpture.



Preliminary Pediatric Interns


Anne Frea

 

Anne was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin and received a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  As an undergraduate, Anne was an all-conference basketball player and the University of Rochester's Female Student Athlete of the Year during her senior year.  Anne has been a volunteer at a free clinic, a science fair advisor for middle school students, a volunteer with Physicians for Social Responsibility, and has done research on gait analysis with the Orthopedic Surgery department.  Anne enjoys basketball, volleyball, scrapbooking, and music.  Anne will be entering a Family Medicine residency at the completion of this preliminary year.



Kelly
Traeger

Kelly was born in Milwaukee and received a B.S. in Biology and an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  During medical school, Kelly was the co-president of Doctors Ought to Care, the co-founder of the Fun Club, which organized charity drives and student outings, was a member of the admissions committee, and the co-president of the Wilderness Medicine Interest Group.  She was also a member of the Pediatric and Ob/Gyn Interest groups and volunteered at free clinics.  Kelly is a co-author on 2 chapters of a medical student text that is currently in press.  Kelly will be entering a residency in Anesthesiology a the conclusion of the preliminary year.  Kelly enjoys backpacking, canoeing, running, theater, cooking, swimming, biking, skiing, and traveling.



Guojun
Zhang

Guojun is a native of China and had previously practiced general pediatrics in China for several years before moving to the United States.  Guojun has extensive research experience in Neurology with a long list of peer-reviewed publications.  Most recently, he has been working at the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on several research studies.  Guojun enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, and has a second child on the way.  Guojun will be entering a Neurology residency at the completion of this year, with plans to be a pediatric neurologist.
