Pulmonary Fellowship

Thank you for your interest in the pediatric pulmonary fellowship program at the Medical College of Wisconsin affiliated hospitals and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee. This is a 3-year program open to candidates who have completed a pediatric residency at an accredited program in the U.S. or Canada. We are currently recruiting for a fellow for the 2009-2010 academic year. The goals of this program include:

  1. To adequately educate and provide the background that is necessary for a trainee to diagnose and manage any pediatric pulmonary disorder.
  2. To prepare the trainee to conduct research in the area of pediatric pulmonary diseases.
  3. To enable the trainee to become a competent teacher of pediatric pulmonary medicine.

The first year of training is primarily clinical with approximately 5 months on the inpatient pulmonary service, and other month rotations including the intensive care unit, anesthesia, elective time, and a lab month divided between the pulmonary function laboratory and the sleep lab, among others. The second and third years are primarily research-related with several inpatient rotations included. Outpatient experience is continued throughout the 3 years of training. The pediatric pulmonary section includes 9 faculty as well as 1 to 2 fellows per year. Approximately 4,000 outpatients are evaluated per year. Clinical programs include a tracheostomy and home ventilator program, busy pediatric and adult cystic fibrosis clinics, a lung and heart-lung transplantation program, an active flexible bronchoscopy service, and state-of-the-art pulmonary function and sleep laboratories. Various research opportunities are available both in the Department of Pediatrics as well as in other departments at the medical school. Areas of clinical and basic research interest include the benefits of newborn screening for cystic fibrosis, the technology-dependent child, obstructive sleep apnea, RSV and the development of asthma, rural asthma, recurrent hypoxia in the newborn period, and ALTEs and SIDS.

Milwaukee is a very nice city with over 1 million people in the greater metro area and a referral base of over 2 million people. Various cultural, athletic, and educational programs are available within the city. If you are interested in this program, please complete the enclosed application form and have 3 letters of reference forwarded to my attention. We will schedule interviews based on the information provided and will be able to provide some travel support during your interview time. Please contact me should you have any further questions regarding the fellowship program. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
