A letter from the Director

Welcome

Public health has advanced significantly with important new research challenges emerging. The next generation of public health leaders will face these challenges with communities and academicians increasingly engaging each other in building healthier societies. The Medical College of Wisconsin is pleased to offer a cutting-edge doctoral program in public and community health aimed precisely at leading this charge.

Community health may be defined as a state of well-being and the capability to function in the face of changing circumstances, emphasizing social and personal resources as well as physical capabilities. Community health improvement is a shared responsibility of health care providers, public health officials, and a variety of other people in the community who can contribute to the well-being of individuals and populations.

The purpose of the program is to transform the research paradigm in public and community health by educating a new generation of innovative researchers who will integrate the rigors of traditional public health sciences with the essential components of community health improvement through participation and partnership. Through relevant coursework, comprehensive programs in research, and service, our students acquire the knowledge and skills required to assume leadership roles in public health.

The program has an outstanding faculty that is involved in teaching, research, and community service locally, nationally, and internationally. We collaborate directly with an array of local and regional public health systems. We are also involved in numerous projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Medical College of Wisconsin Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin.

We invite you to explore our Web site. We look forward to hearing from you with any questions that you may have about our program.
