April 23 - Milwaukee Alderman Jim Bohl accused Milwaukee Health Department officials of arrogance and misinformation regarding a $900,000 grant to educate physicians and parents about HPV vaccinations. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Apr 24 - As a philosophy and healing practice, restorative practices bring people together when relationships are damaged by the specific actions of one or more people. These restorative practices are designed to develop common understanding between people and increase trust levels. The three fundamental goals are repair harm, restore relationships and build community.
Apr 23 - Jackson Katz, PhD, internationally known educator, author, filmmaker and cultural theorist, will give a free multimedia presentation on Wednesday, May 1, titled, Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity. The event will be held at the Italian Community Center, 631 E. E. Chicago St., and run from 8 – 11:30 a.m. It is sponsored by the Medical College of Wisconsin Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) and Jewish Family Services.

Apr 22 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) received a one-year, $8,000 award from the Health Resources and Services Administration to fund a new Public Health Traineeship program.
April 8 - MCW and Froedtert are working with the Wisconsin Division of Health on follow-up testing of patients and staff members who were in contact with a health care worker at Froedtert who tested positive for an active case of tuberculosis. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Making Milwaukee smile program is helping to improve the oral health of thousands of children in Milwaukee schools. The program is a collaboration of The Medical College of Wisconsin, Columbia St. Mary's, Milwaukee Public Schools, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Dental Center, Marquette University School of Dentistry, and many other community organizations.
A coalition of La Crosse organizations and the Medical College of Wisconsin aims to reduce alcohol-related injuries and deaths among youth in La Crosse County.
Columbia St. Mary’s, the Medical College and community advocates have joined forces to develop the Community-Based Chronic Disease Management Clinics that bring preventive health care to at-risk people in locations they are already frequenting, such as food pantries and churches. Clients have regular access to monitoring of blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels; medications; and education on healthy eating and exercise; all at no charge.

The Saturday Clinic for the Uninsured, a joint venture of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Columbia St. Mary’s, has expanded its services to include pediatric patients.
Nov., 08 - Results from the “Greening of Vacant Lots” project in Philadelphia will be shared at a special presentation Monday, Nov. 19, at the Mitchell Park Pavilion on the Lagoon (behind the Mitchell Park Domes), sponsored by the Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) violence prevention initiative’s research and evaluation team for community grand rounds. The purpose of the community grand rounds is to educate and engage a broad community audience in approaches to violence prevention.
The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (HWPP) will fund 12 new community health projects totaling $4.5 million. The Business Journal
The National Institutes of Health has awarded a transformative grant to the Medical College that supports a partnership of eight Milwaukee institutions designed to move research discoveries more quickly to patient applications. The $20 million Clinical and Translational Science Award bridges institutions to connect faculty members with complementary interests and expertise, such as Dr. Michelle Johnson, whose robots are aiding in stroke rehabilitation.
Oct. 04 - The Institute for Health and Society has launched an improved and interactive Health Equity and Urban Clinical Care Partnerships Website. The updated site includes links to research data, news publications, and local, statewide, and national data on racial health disparities.
Sept. 17 - Six teams from across Wisconsin were selected to participate in a year-long leadership training program that will help prepare them to address their communities’ most pressing health concerns.

Patient at Risk gives emergency responders specific, individualized instructions for children and youth with special health care needs. The program has been piloted in Milwaukee at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Baraboo, Waukesha and West Allis, and is being rolled out statewide.

July 30 - Syed M. Ahmed, MD, MPH, DrPH, has been named Senior Associate Dean for Community Engagement, effective immediately. Dr. Ahmed currently serves as Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and Professor in the Institute for Health and Society. He is also the Director of the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program and the Director of the Center for Healthy Communities and Research. Upon assuming the Senior Associate Dean role, Dr. Ahmed will relinquish his position as Associate Dean for Public
and Community Health.
Impressive are the bodies of work of this year’s alumni award recipients. Dr. Thomas Chisholm received the Humanitarian Award for his dedication to the underserved domestically and internationally.
All three recipients of The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Distinguished Service Awards this year are alumni. The award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Medical College faculty member.
The Senior Awards Dinner for the Medical School Class of 2011 was held May 19, 2011, at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. The night was an opportunity to celebrate four years of accomplishment with friends and family.
Impressive are the bodies of work of this year’s alumni award recipients. Lt. Gen. C. Bruce Green was named Alumnus of the Year for his military service, including his current role as Air Force Surgeon General
Commencement was held for graduates of The Medical College of Wisconsin on May 20, 2011, at the Milwaukee Theatre. A total of 275 degrees were awarded to students of the Medical School and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, consisting of 206 MD, 21 PhD, 25 MS, 12 MA, and 11 MPH degrees.
The 99th annual commencement took place on May 18 at the Milwaukee Theatre, at which the Medical College of Wisconsin and its Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences awarded 202 MD, 38 PhD, 27 MS, 4 MA, and 18 Master of Public Health degrees, as well as bestowed numerous honors.
The John M. Kohler Foundation has given $250,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin Global Health Program in memory of Dr. Elaine Kohler, a former associate professor of pediatrics and fellow alumna.
June 21 - Beginning this fall, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) will offer a new online introductory course on the concepts, theories and principles of community engagement and community engagement in research. Introduction to Community Engagement: Principles of Community Engagement and Community Engagement in Research is an elective in the College’s Master’s Program in Clinical and Translational Science but is open to anyone enrolled in the MCW Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
