The Center for the Study of Bioethics has established and staffs a clinical consultation service for hospitals and health care institutions in the Milwaukee area. This service provides bioethics advice at the bedside at the request of individual clinicians. In addition, the Center’s Midwest Ethics Committee Network provides assistance to ethics committees and ethics consultants through the region to facilitate resolution of bioethical dilemmas that arise in their own institutions. The Center for the Study of Bioethics also provides consultation with state and federal government leaders including review of proposed state legislation on bioethics issues. The Center also works in concert with national bioethics and specialty professional organizations, including the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, the American Medical Association and the American Bar Association, to evaluate emerging bioethics issues and make recommendations for the development of public policy and professional standards. The Biostatistics Consulting Service in the Division of Biostatistics provides comprehensive statistical consulting and data entry services for clients within and outside of the Medical College of Wisconsin. Specific services offered include assistance in grant proposal preparation, design of clinical trials, experimental design, survey design, determination of sample size requirement, randomization, data management and entry, modeling, data analysis and interpretation. Consulting is offered by Biostatistics faculty and staff for a standard fee and is provided on an appointment basis. The Epidemiology Data Service Center (EDSC) is the Medical College of Wisconsin’s centralized resource for secondary health and demographic data. The EDSC also provides expertise in the use of spatial data and geographic information systems, or GIS. The Midwest Ethics Committee Network (MECN) is an umbrella organization that was established in 1987 to provide bioethics resources to institutions and individuals throughout the region, the country and the world.
