and Chief Operating Officer
G. Allen Bolton, Jr., has served as the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration, and Chief Operating Officer, since September, 2011.
He was formerly the senior associate dean for administration and finance at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Medicine (UAB). Mr. Bolton has over 25 years of experience in departmental and institutional administration at three prestigious academic medical centers.
Mr. Bolton has an extensive portfolio of experiences, including oversight of a $950 million annual budget; recruitment and retention of academic department chairs; strategic planning; facilities management; construction of research, medical education, and office facilities; implementation of and management of research programs in cancer and injury prevention; LCME self-study and accreditation processes; and management of a $1 billion endowment.
At the Medical College of Wisconsin Mr. Bolton serves as staff to the Board of Trustees Finance Committee, Investment Committee, Facilities Committee and Audit Committee. Additionally, he is a board member of Medical College Physicians, Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin Community Physicians, Joint Pediatric Leadership Groups and MCW Technology Transfer Coalition.
Mr. Bolton earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee School of Education, a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate School of Management.
Early in his career, he held faculty appointments at UAB and UTSW, and has published 15 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He was also active in extramurally funded grants, serving as project director or co-principal investigator of grants from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control, and various national foundations.
Bolton served on the editorial board of the Journal of Research Administration. He has been active in a number of national professional societies, including the Association of Academic Health Centers, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Business Affairs and the Group on Institutional Planning, and the Society of Research Administrators.
