 What are the retirement options for postdoctoral fellows? And when can participation start?

You are eligible to participate in a Voluntary 403(b) plan immediately upon employment.  Contributions to the plan are not matched by MCW.

 How does vacation/sick time work?

On your first day of employment you are given 80 hours of vacation and 96 hours of sick time.  Your vacation and sick time does not roll over into the next year.  When you leave the college, any unused vacation and sick time does not get paid out to you.

 What documents need to be taken to the Social Security Office when applying for a Social Security card?

Each person's situation may be different, so it is best to check on the Social Security Administration website before going.

 How can I obtain a credit card without a U.S. credit history?

M&I Bank guarantees a credit card with a $1000 credit limit to postdoctoral fellows who have their payroll checks direct deposited into an M&I account.  Applications are available through the Office of Postdoctoral Education.

 What kind of health insurance coverage does MCW offer and how much does it cost?
  • Self-funded PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) utilizing MCW's network of physicians and affiliated providers
  • Office visit co-pays $25 (excludes preventive visits) / ER co-pay $100 (waived if admitted)
  • Non-network coverage provided by Humana’s ChoiceCare providers after applicable co-pays with calendar year deductible of $500/person up to maximum of $1,000/family; co-insurance at 30% of covered charges after deductible is met; out-of-pocket maximum cost per calendar year is $1,750/person up to maximum of $3,500/family based on discounted fees for service
  • Non-network coverage provided after applicable co-pays with calendar year deductible of $500/person up to maximum of $1,000/family; co-insurance at 35% of covered charges after deductible is met; out-of-pocket maximum cost per calendar year is $1,750/person up to maximum of $3,500/family for usual and customary charges
  • Lifetime maximum benefit level is $2,000,000
  • Prescription drug coverage provided by Express Scripts:

 What kind of recreational activities are on campus?

An exercise room is located in the basement with treadmills, cycles, and weights.

 What types of activities are held for postdoctoral fellows to meet other postdocs?

A welcoming luncheon is held in the first month of arrival at MCW.  In the spring we hold a Town Hall Meeting, in the summer a picnic, and in the winter a holiday party.  On the fourth Tuesday of every month, we have Science on Tap, an opportunity for postdocs to practice giving presentations to your peers.

 Do I need to carry any type of identification?

If you will be driving, you should always carry your driver's license. If you are not planning on driving, you should still obtain a State ID because a picture ID may be required of you.  You can obtain a State ID at any Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It is also a good idea to carry your MCW ID badge especially on weekends or at night, when access to certain areas is restricted to the public.

Access to parking requires a properly coded ID card. You will be given your parking assignment from the Office of Public Safety.

 Who should I contact if I am sexually harassed?

Any sexual harassment of employees at the Medical College of Wisconsin constitutes a violation of College policy. Contact the Office of Human Resources as soon as possible.

 How do I set up an MCW email account? Is there internet access available to me on campus?

You need to contact Information Services Help Desk at 955-4357 to set up an email account.

Internet access is available in the Todd Wehr Library and in the computer labs (as long as there isn't a class or exam), which are all located on the third floor of the HRC/MEB buildings. Access is free of charge.  WiFi around campus is in the process of being set up.

You can purchase stamps on campus from Matthew's MCW Bookstore. If you're off campus you can purchase stamps at some grocery stores.
