Some of the features that distinguish this residency program from others include:
1. A required on-call system of reasonable frequency with No overnight psychiatry call in the PGY-I and PGY-II years. 2. Three month blocks in PGY-1 year permits, at most, only 3 consecutive months away from psychiatry. 3. Maximum of nine months of required adult inpatient rotations frees much of the PGY-IV year for electives. 4. Splitting the required inpatient psychiatry rotations between the PGY-I and PGY-III years permits residents to return to inpatient duties in a team leadership role. 5. One of a handful of separate psychotherapy training services nationwide. 6. Opportunity to treat outpatients continuously for over three years. 7. Faculty includes training and supervising psychoananlysts and others who are experts in cognitive and behavioral therapy. 8. Outpatient neurology clinics for part of the neurology requirement. 9. Multiplicity of training sites offer access to several patient populations both in the public and private sectors. 10. Elective research opportunities in a department that is ranked 22nd in the nation among medical school psychiatry departments receiving NIMH funding. 11. Access to the Chairman and senior faculty through journal clubs and seminars. 12. Opportunities to teach medical students (MCW has 200 in each class). 13.
