Dec. 13 - The Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) announces the 2013 request for application (RFA) for a KL2 Translational Science Career Development Award for a junior faculty member interested in pursuing a clinical research career. The CTSI is accepting KL2 Translational Science Award applications from full-time junior faculty from the Medical College of Wisconsin to conduct mentored, interdisciplinary research.
Dec. 10 - Nita H. Salzman, MD, PhD, a pediatric gastroenterology researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, received a five-year, $7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The award will fund an investigation into the link between intestinal bacteria and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Dec. 10 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) has received the Gold Well Workplace Award from the Wellness Council of America for its commitment to the health and well-being of its employees through the Wellness at Work Program. This honor recognizes MCW as one of “America’s Healthiest Companies.”
Dec. 10 - Brian Dranka, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow in Biophysics, was selected to receive the Young Investigator Award from the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine (SFRBM). Dr. Dranka received the award at the society’s annual meeting in November for the poster he presented, The NADPH Oxidase inhibitor diapocynin prevents Parkinson’s disease symptoms in the Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2R1441G) transgenic mouse.
Dec. 07 - John A. Weigelt, MD, Milton & Lidy Lunda/Charles Aprahamian Professor of Trauma, Professor of Surgery, Chief of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery, Associate Dean for Clinical Quality, and Medical Director of the Joint Quality Office, was selected by his peers as one of 18 Giants of Parkland Surgery. Parkland Hospital is located in Dallas and is affiliated with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where Dr. Weigelt completed his surgical residency.
Dec. 07 - Dale K. Heuer, MD, Chairman and Professor of Ophthalmology, is one of nine ophthalmologists nationwide selected to receive the Life Achievement Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Dr. Heuer received the award at the AAO annual meeting last month in Chicago.
Dec. 07 - Paula North, MD, PhD Professor and Chief of Pediatric Pathology, has been awarded a 2012 Fogarty GEOHealth Hubs Planning Grant along with partners, Ronald Hines, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics, Cesar Augusto Cabezas Sanchez, MD of the Peruvian NIH (Institute Nacional de Salud) and Luis Vasquez, MD, President of the Yantalo Peru Foundation.
Dec. 07 - Neil Hogg, PhD, Professor of Biophysics, Assistant Dean of Students in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Director of the Redox Biology Program, has been named President-Elect of the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine (SFRBM). He will serve in this role until 2014, and then serve as President of the society for two years.
Dec. 5 - The Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute and the Medical College of Wisconsin are recruiting patients for a clinical trial investigating a novel treatment for urea cycle disorders (UCD) in children.
Dec. 5 - A Wisconsin research team, including investigators at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute, received a federal grant to review the use of pulse oximetry (POX) screening in babies born in Wisconsin hospitals, birthing centers and home deliveries.
Dec. 4 - Howard J. Jacob, PhD, Warren P. Knowles Professor and Chair of Genetics and Director of the Human and Molecular Genetics Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), will sit on a panel and present his vision of the future of personalized medicine at the inaugural Forbes Healthcare Summit on Dec. 5 in New York City.
Nov. 28 - Parameswaran Hari, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Medicine (Hematology and oncology), has been named the first Armand J. Quick/William F. Stapp Professor in Hematology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Hari is an internationally renowned researcher in multiple myeloma, and serves as director of the adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Program (BMT) at Froedtert Hospital. He is also the scientific director for the plasma cells disorder working committee at the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research.
Nov. 27 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $650,000 award from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to investigate how muscular dystrophy causes cardiac muscle to deteriorate, a condition known as dystrophic cardiomyopathy.
Nov. 26 - Stephen Gauld, PhD, an infectious and immunologic disease researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, received a $20,000 award from the Lupus Foundation of America, Wisconsin Chapter, during the organization’s annual Fall into Fashion Luncheon at North Hills Country Club in Menomonee Falls.
Nov.21 - Local, national and international experts will raise awareness of local and international partnerships and initiatives during the Medical College of Wisconsin’s second annual Global Health Week, which runs Nov. 26 through Nov. 30.
Nov. 21 - Sarah Tully Marks, MD, a family physician in the St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency program, has been elected a resident member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency is a collaboration between the Medical College of Wisconsin and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare.
Nov. 19 - Seed grants are critical to the development of novel ideas and projects, new investigators, and the future of cancer research. Seed grants provide investigators with the initial support they need to further their science, collect data, publish, and secure peer-reviewed funding.
Nov. 20 - A collaborative team of researchers from Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the Medical College of Wisconsin received a one-year, $50,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin to study the mechanisms behind hand motor control and sensory feedback in stroke patients.
Nov. 20 - Scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the BloodCenter of Wisconsin received a one-year, $50,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) to study new methods to treat solid tumors in pediatric patients.
Nov. 20 - The MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc.), the College's largest donor, has two items for sale this holiday season to raise money for pediatric cancer and related blood disorder research. All money raised from the sale of these items benefits the MACC Fund.
Nov. 15 - A Medical College of Wisconsin dermatologist studying new agents to stop the spread of melanoma has received a $75,000 donation from Ann’s Hope Foundation to advance his research.
Nov. 15 - The Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) is sponsoring a conference entitled, Genomics & Personalized Medicine – Analysis and Clinical Implementation, on Monday, Dec. 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Marquette University Alumni Memorial Union. The overall focus of the conference is to facilitate inter-institutional and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
Nov. 15 - Ryan J. Goerlitz, CPA, has been named Director of Budgets for the Medical College of Wisconsin by Margie M. Spencer, Chief Financial Officer. Goerlitz will begin in his new role Dec. 1.
Nov. 14 - Celebrating its 15th anniversary, WBCS, Inc. (previously the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse, Inc.) presented a $350,000 check to the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Cancer Center during the organization’s annual Appreciation Evening at the Town Club in Fox Point. That brings the Showhouse’s total contributions to MCW to $4.75 million since 1998.
Nov. 14 - Twin Disc, Inc., a corporation with nearly a 90-year history, is helping the Medical College of Wisconsin build upon its considerable history in cancer research. The company’s recent gift of $50,000 is supporting initiatives in the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.
Nov. 13 - Popularly known as the “Festival of Lights,” and thought to have originated as a harvest festival, Deepavali (Diwali) is one of the most important and vibrant of Indian festivals and is celebrated all over the world with much zeal. Derived from Sanskrit, Deepavali means row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa), which are lit in recognition of the victory of light over darkness, in deference to the light of higher knowledge driving out all ignorance and enabling an awakening within us, with which comes compassion, joy and peace. Diwali is thus a celebration of self-enlightenment and this Inner Light.
Nov. 12 - Nurse Practitioner Week is being celebrated from Nov. 7 through Nov. 13. It is the perfect time for the MCW community to celebrate the contributions of MCW’s 227 nurse practitioners (NPs) who are employed across Medical College Physicians and Children’s Specialty Group. Many of our faculty also work with NPs employed by our affiliate partners – Froedtert Health, Children’s Medical Group and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center.
Nov., 08 - Native American Heritage Month is honored annually in the United States to pay tribute to the rich ancestry and heritage of Native Americans (American Indians). It is a perfect time to highlight some of the programs the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) has in place to address health problems that impact Native Americans disproportionately.

Nov., 08 - The fourth annual Have a Heart Motorcycle Ride, led by the Suburban Milwaukee HOG (Harley Owners Group) Chapter, raised $12,000 to support research in the Medical College of Wisconsin Cardiovascular Center this year.
Nov., 08 - Results from the “Greening of Vacant Lots” project in Philadelphia will be shared at a special presentation Monday, Nov. 19, at the Mitchell Park Pavilion on the Lagoon (behind the Mitchell Park Domes), sponsored by the Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) violence prevention initiative’s research and evaluation team for community grand rounds. The purpose of the community grand rounds is to educate and engage a broad community audience in approaches to violence prevention.
Nov., 07 - A contingent from the Wisconsin-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (WI-1 DMAT) is on the east coast assisting in relief efforts following Hurricane Sandy. The Hurricane Sandy emergency strike team includes one doctor, two nurses and three paramedics from Wisconsin who are helping to staff a 250-bed, makeshift federal hospital station for patients and nursing home residents in Middlesex, New Jersey. The WI-1 DMAT is coordinated by Jason Liu, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and associate EMS Medical Director at the Medical College of Wisconsin
Nov., 07 - A research team at the Medical College of Wisconsin received a three-year, nearly $400,000 AOSpine Research Network award from AOSpine International of Davos, Switzerland, to study imaging methods of spinal disc degeneration.
Nov., 07 - Steven H. Kroft, MD, Professor of Pathology, Vice Chair for Clinical Pathology, and Director of Hematopathology, was elected President-Elect of the American Society for Clinical Pathology Nov. 2 at the society's annual meeting in Boston.
Nov., 06 - The second annual Trees of Hope dinner and gala is planned for Saturday, Nov. 17, from 5-11 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel Mayfair, 2303 N. Mayfair Road. Proceeds from the event, which aims to kick off the holidays and help kick cancer, will go to organizations that find cures for blood-related cancers, including the MCW Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research.

Nov., 05 - R. Blake Hill, PhD, a recognized leader in protein chemistry, has been appointed Professor of Biochemistry at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He comes from Johns Hopkins University, where he was Associate Professor of Biology and Chemistry. Dr. Hill’s research is focused on proteins that regulate the mitochondrial lifecycle during aging, neurodegeneration and cancer.
Nov. 05 - The Celebrating Brad Foundation is holding a chili cook-off on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 5-10 p.m. at Flux Design, 811 E. Vienna in Milwaukee. Proceeds from the event will support cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Nov., 02 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) successfully competed for, and was awarded, renewal of the Stem Cell Therapeutics Outcomes Database contract with the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The CIBMTR administers the database as a key component of the national hematopoietic cell transplantation program. Hematopoietic stem cells are the cells responsible for continual regeneration of circulating blood cells throughout life; they are not embryonic stem cells.
Nov., 01 - Balaraman Kalyanaraman, PhD, Harry R. & Angeline E. Quadracci Professor in Parkinson’s Research and Chairman of Biophysics, and his research team were co-authors on a study, Anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of an orally active apocynin derivative in pre-clinical models of Parkinson’s disease, published in the online version of the Journal of Neuroinflammation.
Nov. 01 - Researchers at Marquette University, Concordia University and Rogers Memorial Hospital received a one-year, $50,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) to study possible new pharmaceutical treatments for schizophrenia.
Oct. 31 - Emily Sweet, a fourth-year medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been named the recipient of the 2012 Walter Zeit Fellowship Leadership Award. This prestigious award is presented to the senior student who has consistently displayed superior qualities of leadership, loyalty, selfless service, initiative and compassion toward his or her peers and the Medical College. It is the highest student honor bestowed by the Walter Zeit Fellowship, MCW’s premier donor recognition society.
Oct. 31 - Zeljko J. Bosnjak, PhD, Professor of Anesthesiology and Physiology and Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), was named President-Elect of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology during the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting earlier this month.
Oct. 30 - Two Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) female faculty researchers were honored at MCW’s annual Women in Science Awards Luncheon on Oct. 25. The luncheon, held at the Medical College, was the final event in the sixth annual Women in Science series, and was presented by Quarles & Brady and Dr. Lucille Rosenberg. The awards included a $10,000 research award to an established scientist and the $1,000 Edward J. Lennon, M.D. award to an outstanding woman postdoctoral researcher.

Oct. 29 - Adrian Miranda, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Gastroenterology), won the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Prize from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition for his study entitled, Salivary Amylase as a Biomarker for Functional Abdominal Pain in Children: Role of Sleep and Melatonin.
Oct. 29 - Frank A. Pintar, PhD, Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center Neuroscience Research laboratories, received the Award of Merit from the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) at their annual meeting in Seattle. The AAAM Award of Merit is the association’s highest honor and was given to Dr Pintar for his significant contributions to injury biomechanics and to the field of automotive safety.
Oct. 26 - The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (HWPP) will fund 12 new community health projects totaling $4.5 million.
Oct. 26 - On Nov. 2, the second annual DocRock will be held to showcase the musical talents of members of the Medical College of Wisconsin community and help support Milwaukee neighborhood free health clinics and the people they serve. Oct. 26 - Osama (Sam) Zaidat, MD, MS, Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology and Chief of Neurointerventional Neurology, served as editor of the Endovascular Acute Ischemic Stroke Therapy: Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology Roundtable Proceedings, the largest and most comprehensive supplement on endovascular ischemic stroke therapy recently published in the Journal of Neurology.
Oct. 26 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute received a four-year, $4.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to investigate the genes involved in type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Oct. 24 - As a participant in federal Title IV student financial assistance programs, the Medical College of Wisconsin must comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act). The Clery Act requires institutions to disclose campus crime statistics and security information.
Oct. 24 - Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) and the Wisconsin Partnership Program (WPP) presented their first joint conference, “Leading the Way,” on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Italian Community Center. More than 300 attendees and presenters celebrated the accomplishments and shared lessons learned by past and currently funded projects from the endowment programs at both the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Oct. 23 - Michelle A. Michel, MD, Professor of Radiology and Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences and Chief of Head and Neck Neuroradiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), was named president-elect of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology during the society’s annual meeting in Miami, Fla. Dr. Michel previously served as vice president and chair of the society’s membership committee.
Oct. 23 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a two-year, $440,000 award from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Nursing Research to investigate the decision-making processes between Latina girls and their mothers when it comes to obtaining the HPV vaccine.
Robert J. Lefkowitz, MD, James B. Duke Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry at Duke University Medical Center and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, was one of two researchers who shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry.
Oct. 19 - John Routes, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), Medical Director of Allergy/Clinical Immunology at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and an investigator at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute, has been elected President of the Clinical Immunology Society for 2013-2014. Dr. Routes is currently a member of the society’s executive committee.

Oct. 17 - Jay Sandlow, MD, Vice Chairman and Professor of Urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), is editor of Microsurgery for Fertility Specialists: A Practical Text, a recently published textbook for physicians who specialize in the surgical treatment of male infertility and andrology (male reproductive health). Dr. Sandlow practices at Froedtert Hospital and also is the director of the male infertility and andrology fellowship program in MCW’s Department of Urology.
Oct. 17 - Joseph O’Grady Jr., MD, FAAP, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, received the Special Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics for distinguished service and his leadership and commitment to making improvements in mental health practices and training for primary care providers.

Oct. 15 - The Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin is hosting a series this spring titled, Methods in Grant Preparation Seminar Series, to present advanced principles of the National Institutes of Health grant preparation. The series will be held on Tuesdays from Jan. 22 through May 7 in HRC Room M2050 and run from 5-7 p.m. It is directed by David Harder, PhD, Associate Dean for Mentoring.
Oct. 12 - October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, and on the first day of the month, a 62nd life was saved as a result of Project ADAM, a Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin program that helps schools throughout the nation prepare for and respond to cardiac emergencies. Stuart Berger, MD, Professor of Pediatrics (Cardiology) at the Medical College of Wisconsin, is Medical Director of the program.
Oct. 15 - September 15 - October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month – a time in which to learn, honor and pay tribute to the achievements of Hispanics throughout history. Agustin (Gus) Ramirez, Chair of Husco Intl, and MCW Board of Trustees member talks about growing up Puerto Rican and why mission work in our communities, here and abroad, is so important to him and to MCW.
Oct. 12 - Scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee received a one-year, $100,000 John and Jeanne Byrnes CTSI Award to study novel technologies. The goal of the project is to design, assemble and test an integrated system for Optogenic Brain Stimulation-fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) and demonstrate its use for exploring clinically relevant applications.
Oct. 11 - The MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc.) harnesses the power of people to make great things possible. The ability to rally the community to the cause of helping kids with cancer has been a character trait of the organization since its founding in 1976. That effort has led to the MACC Fund contributing nearly $34 million to the Medical College of Wisconsin for pediatric cancer and related blood disorders research. This year, research in the College’s MACC Fund Research Center is being supported by a donation of more than $1.67 million.
Oct. 10 - Erwin Hirsch, MD, who served on the MCW faculty in various capacities from 1970 to 1999, including 11 years as Associate Dean for Continuing Education, died Oct. 3. He was 92 years old.

Oct. 10 - Physician Assistants Week is celebrated annually in the United States from Oct. 6, which is the anniversary of the first graduating physician assistants class at Duke University on Oct. 6, 1967, through Oct. 12. It is the perfect time for the MCW community to celebrate the contributions of MCW’s 118 physician assistants.

Oct. 09 - The Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute received a one-year award for more than $375,000 from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The award will fund an investigation of the factors involved in regulating the production of autoantibodies, which are antibodies that target an individual’s own tissues. These autoantibodies are linked to autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Oct. 08 - The third annual Milwaukee Regional Research Forum and Public Policy Forum Viewpoint Luncheon will be held on Monday, Oct. 29, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Milwaukee West Hotel. This year’s Viewpoint Luncheon panel discussion topic is, Milwaukee’s Information Technology Infrastructure: Do We Have What It Takes To Compete?
Oct. 08 - The second annual Get Your Rear in Gear 5K run and walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Hart Park in Wauwatosa. The event supports the Medical College of Wisconsin’s programs for colon cancer research, education, prevention and screening. Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, claiming more than 54,000 lives every year.

Oct. 05 - The Medical College’s Pediatric Dermatology section hosted a successful conference earlier this summer for families with children affected by PHACE Syndrome. The conference was attended by 25 families from across North America (attendees were from 15 states and Canada), who had the opportunity to hear presentations on PHACE Syndrome from pediatric subspecialists, network with physicians and other families impacted by the syndrome, and participate in several ongoing clinical and translational research projects based at MCW.
Oct. 05 - J. Frank Wilson, MD, Chairman and Bernard & Miriam Peck Family Professor of Radiation Oncology, has been selected to receive the Milwaukee Academy of Medicine 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Wilson will receive his award on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the University Club.
Oct. 05 - Beth A. Erickson-Wittmann, MD, Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been chosen as a 2012 Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). Sept. 26 - The Department of Radiology’s Division of Vascular & Interventional Radiology was awarded the Magna Cum Laude for its electronic poster presentation, Percutaneous in Utero Thoracoamniotic Shunt Creation for Congenital Lung Malformations: A Novel Technique, presented at the 2012 Cardiovascular & Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE) annual meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. The poster was a collaborative effort with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology’s Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Sept. 25 - Scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin have discovered a link between chronic sleep loss and bone and blood production. Results of a new study show chronic sleep restriction leads to an arrest in bone remodeling that could potentially affect healing, along with significant changes in cells produced in bone marrow.

Sept. 19 - The Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin’s Max McGee National Research Center for Juvenile Diabetes received two grants totaling $400,000 from JDRF to study a biomarker identified as a potential predictive marker of the development of type 1 diabetes, and to identify pathways that could potentially lead to therapeutic interventions for patients who develop the disease.

Sept. 18 - David Watts, MD, physician-writer and poet, will be the featured speaker at the Medical College’s 7th annual Medical Humanities Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m. Dr. Watt’s lecture, entitled, “What Literature Can Do For Medicine,” is sponsored by the college’s Medical Humanities Program, a component of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities in the Institute for Health and Society. Sept 14 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a $40,000 grant from the ALS Association’s Jeff Kaufman Fund to study the impact of skeletal muscle on the progression of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, as it’s commonly known.

Riccardo Colella, DO, MPH, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, has been appointed by Governor Scott Walker to serve on the Wisconsin Department of Health Emergency Medical Services Advisory Board. The EMS Advisory Board provides recommendations directly to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
Sept. 10 - A team of researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute defined a new treatment for a potentially fatal lung disease in patients with a primary immunodeficiency known as common variable immunodeficiency. The findings are published in the Journal of Clinical Immunology.
Sept. 10 - Carlyle H. Chan, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and the Institute for Health and Society (Bioethics and Humanities), has been invited to serve as one of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education’s (ACCME) representatives to the Coalition for Physician Accountability. The coalition seeks to advance the quality of healthcare and professional accountability.
Sept. 06 - A new interactive career planning tool developed by a Medical College of Wisconsin faculty member, along with faculty and staff from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), will be available online beginning Sept. 7. Sept. 06 - The Center for BioMolecular Modeling (CBM) at Milwaukee School of Engineering has been awarded a four-year, $750,000 Science Education Drug Abuse Partnership Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support a project entitled Drugs, Drug Targets and You. The project is a collaborative effort of the MSOE Center for BioMolecular Modeling, led by Tim Herman, PhD; the Medical College of Wisconsin Neuroscience Research Center, led by Cecilia Hillard, PhD; and Shuchismita Dutta of the Protein Data Bank at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Sept. 06 - John Routes, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, has been elected President of the Clinical Immunology Society for 2013-2014. Dr. Routes is currently a member of the society’s Executive Committee, and will assume the presidency in July.
Sept. 06 - THRIVE, The Integrative Conference for Women’s Health, will be held Oct. 24-26 at the Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva. This interdisciplinary conference will provide opportunities for women’s health providers, primary and holistic health providers, interdisciplinary leaders in women’s health, and research personnel interested in areas of integrative medicine and women’s health.

Sept. 06 - Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee received a one-year, $50,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin to study interaction between parent and child during developmental stimulation of children with global developmental delays, specifically Down syndrome.
Sept. 05 -The Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute received a five-year, $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The study will investigate ear infections and explore potential new treatments.
Sept. 05 - Balaraman Kalyanaraman, PhD, Harry R. & Angeline E. Quadracci Professor in Parkinson’s Research and Chairman of Biophysics, and his research team had their study, Alterations in bioenergetic function induced by Parkinson’s disease mimetic compounds: Lack of correlation with superoxide generation, published in the September issue of Journal of Neurochemistry.
Sept. 04 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) received a one-year, $8,000 award from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to help fund the 19th annual Midwest Microbial Pathogenesis Conference (MMPC), which will be held from Sept. 7-9, at MCW.

The start for the all-ages Scarecrow Shuffle 1-mile walk is 9 a.m., and the start for the 5k run is 9:30 a.m.
Aug. 29 - Julie Biller, MD, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program, was asked to testify on behalf of the national Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the Sept. 15 open public hearing of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Anti-Infective Drugs Advisory Committee. Dr. Biller will speak in support of tobramycin inhalation powder (TIP) for treatment of cystic fibrosis.

Aug. 22 - A collaborative team of researchers received a one-year, $50,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) to study possible new therapies for cyclical vomiting syndrome, a chronic disorder that affects children and adults.
Aug. 21 - Scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee received a one-year, $100,000 John and Jeanne Byrnes CTSI Award to create a “real” patient avatar that can visit a virtual doctor’s office in cyberspace, and supplement brick and mortar office visits. The goal of the project is to increase access to medical care and reduce healthcare costs without foregoing quality of care.
Aug. 21 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) received a one year, $50,275 supportive care research grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to study new therapies for hearing loss in pediatric cancer patients.
Aug. 21 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to study innovative methods for diagnosing radiation lung injuries before symptoms develop.
Aug. 15 - Bonnie P. Freudinger, an Engineer in the Biotechnology and Bioengineering Center, and two of her student interns from Marquette University, used their process flow and problem-solving expertise to help the Bread of Healing Clinic improve management of its patient medical record system and speed up the time it takes patients to move through the clinic.
Aug. 14 - John S. Rhee, MD, MPH, John C. Koss Professor and Chairman of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences, has been appointed to the Applications for Clinical Trial and Translational Research on the Chemical Senses Study Section of the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The study section reviews research proposals that will advance our knowledge of the senses of taste and smell by evaluating different treatment and intervention strategies and decisions.
Aug. 14 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a two-year, $420,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to investigate the interactions between bacteria that live in the intestine and the intestinal immune system.
Aug. 13 - Alicia Thomas Barr, a graduate student in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), is the recipient of a United Negro College Fund (UNCF)/Merck Science Initiative graduate research fellowship.

Aug. 09 - The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute will be holding its annual symposium on Saturday, Sept. 22, in the MCW Health Research Center Auditorium. This year’s event, titled, Ophthalmology Innovation 2012: Why We Do What We Do, Clinical Trials and the Evidence that Guides Us, will bring together a robust panel of speakers to discuss the what, why, when, and how of clinical trials in ophthalmology.
Aug. 02 - Scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Froedtert Hospital received a one-year, $20,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) to investigate the use of personalized therapies to treat a common type of cancerous brain tumor, called glioblastoma multiforme.
Aug. 02 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a two-year, $420,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Mental Health to study the viability of a promising target for the pharmacological treatment of depression.

Aug. 01 - The 3rd annual Doctor's Dash will be held Saturday, Aug. 4, through the city of St. Francis. The five-mile run and two-mile fun run/walk begin at 9 a.m., and all proceeds generated from the event will support MCW juvenile rheumatoid arthritis research through the Madison Wied Pediatric Research Fund at the Medical College.
Aug. 01 - Nikki Johnston, PhD, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences, has been elected Vice Chair of the Otolaryngology Committee of the World Organization for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus. Her appointment runs through calendar year 2012.
July 31 - Joel H. Blumin, MD, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences and Chief of Laryngology, has been elected a Fellow of the American Laryngological Association (ALA). Membership in the ALA is an honor as members are recognized by their peers as specialists in the management of diseases of the upper aerodigestive tract. This includes diseases or dysfunction related to voice production, swallowing and breathing. Membership is by invitation.
July 30 - Syed M. Ahmed, MD, MPH, DrPH, has been named Senior Associate Dean for Community Engagement, effective immediately. Dr. Ahmed currently serves as Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and Professor in the Institute for Health and Society. He is also the Director of the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program and the Director of the Center for Healthy Communities and Research. Upon assuming the Senior Associate Dean role, Dr. Ahmed will relinquish his position as Associate Dean for Public
and Community Health.
July 30 - Elizabeth J. Cochran, MD, Professor of Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been elected vice president of the American Association of Neuropathologists.
July 26 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a four-year, $1.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to study the use of genetically modified adult stem cells to treat neuropathic pain.
July 25 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has entered into a licensing agreement with Somna Therapeutics, LLC, to bring to market a new medical device designed to treat the symptoms of the most serious form of acid reflux, extraesophageal reflux disease.

Johnson, Program Coordinator II in the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office, co-authored a recently published "New England Journal of Medicine" article, "Antiretroviral Preexposure Prophylaxis for Heterosexual HIV Transmission in Botswana." The article was published online July 11.
July 25 - Sharath Subramanian, MD, cardiology fellow at the Medical College of Wisconsin, is first author on a paper published in the July 25 online issue of "JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association." The paper, "Arterial Inflammation in Patients with HIV," investigated the role of arterial inflammation leading to increased cardiovascular disease in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
July 25 - Doctors and clinical and administrative staff in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery recently participated in the Wisconsin Dental Association’s (WDA) Mission of Mercy, an event that provides free dental care to uninsured and under-insured people in the state.
July 25 - The Community Engagement Key Function of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin will hold a series of Science Cafés at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Center for BioMolecular Modeling that are free and open to the public. The theme of the series is “My Genes/My Health,” and topics will include the benefits of DNA sequencing, the link between stress and marijuana, new advances in stem cell research, and a demonstration of modeling at a molecular level.
July 24 - On Thursday, July 26, the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute will host an art exhibit that showcases the work of seven regional and national artists impacted with various degrees of vision loss. The event, Through the Lens of Others, A Tribute to the Vision of the Mind’s Eye, runs from 5-8 p.m. to help launch Connections in Sight, a new Web-based resource for individuals who are experiencing changes in vision.
July 24 - Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin received a one-year, $20,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) to study the use of blue light as a possible therapy for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in humans.
July 20 - Froedtert Hospital is ranked in a total of 12 specialty areas in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 “Best Hospitals” list, released July 17. Froedtert received national ranking in diabetes/endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, and urology. This places Froedtert Hospital among the top 50 US hospitals in these areas. Additionally, Froedtert ranks as a regional high performer in eight specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; gynecology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and pulmonology.
July 20 - Keith T. Oldham, MD, Professor of Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been elected president of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA).

July 19 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) has received a $2.3 million, four-year grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse to implement and evaluate evidence-based HIV prevention strategies in Ukraine.
Mount Mary College and the MCW have signed a collaborative agreement to provide a dual degree program that includes a four-year baccalaureate degree from Mount Mary and a one-year Master of Public Health degree from MCW.

July 16 - Siddhartha Singh, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and an internal medicine physician at Froedtert Hospital, has been appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer for Medical College Physicians and Froedtert Hospital. In this role, he will share responsibility with Chief Medical Officer Lee Biblo, MD, to oversee clinical research, clinical information technology, and clinical quality and resource management for the hospital’s outpatient and inpatient facilities.

July 12 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The grant will fund an investigation of the three-dimensional structure of the protein assembly that forms around RNA polymerase II (Pol II), the crucial enzyme that reads the genetic information stored on chromosomes and puts it into a form of biopolymer—RNA—that can then be used for protein synthesis.

July 10 - Denise Leinss loved life, and when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, she vowed to someday help other women reclaim theirs from the disease. She told her mom, Colleen, that after she beat cancer, she wanted to become an advocate and give talks encouraging breast cancer victims and survivors.
July 10 - Working in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with breast cancer survivors has made an impact on Kathy Mortl, RN. She has spent the past seven years supporting the survivors however she could during the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. First it was handing out cookies and trinkets during the walk, but last year she launched a new idea she thought would more greatly impact the survivors - she began collecting handmade cards from around the world to present to the survivors prior to the race.
July 09 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a grant of $110,000 from Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) to support research of the causes, treatment, and prevention of blinding diseases. The research will be directed by Dale Heuer, MD, Chairman and Professor of Ophthalmology.
July 06 - Otolaryngology and Communication Science’s 24th annual Roger H. Lehman Lecture and Alumni Event is planned for Friday, July 13, and Saturday, July 14, in the MCW Health Research Center Auditorium. Jesus E. Medina, MD, from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center Department of Otorhinolaryngology in Oklahoma City, will give the Lehman Lecture at 4 p.m. The title of his presentation is, Professionalism in Today’s Medicine.
July 05 - Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the Children's Research Institute in Milwaukee have found that extremely small particles of elemental selenium are highly toxic to leukemia and certain solid tumor cells but well tolerated by normal cells. The small particles are generated when certain selenium-containing dyes are exposed to light, and this small size appears to be essential for the anti-cancer effect.

July 03 - A blessing ceremony was held June 26 for the new 25,000 square foot Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Glendale Family Care Center at 2400 W. Villard in Milwaukee. The new medical office, which opens July 2, houses outpatient primary care services and is the teaching site for the St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency Program, a partnership with The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.

June 25 - The Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) Board of Trustees has authorized MCW’s leadership to enter into the development phase of establishing two community-based medical education campuses in Wisconsin. Sites selected for development are Green Bay and Central Wisconsin with a goal of admitting the first group of medical students to the new campuses as early as the summer of 2015. The Trustees identified milestones that must be achieved before student recruitment will begin on the selected campuses.
Apr. 06 - Ann K. Rosenthal, MD, Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology), has been appointed Chief of the Division of Rheumatology by Roy L. Silverstein, MD, Chairman and the John and Linda Mellowes Professor of Medicine. Dr. Rosenthal also was named the Will and Cava Ross Professor of Medicine, and will assume the new position of Vice Chair for Faculty Development in the Department of Medicine when she completes her current service as Interim Chief of the Medical Service at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center.
Apr. 06 - Lee A. Biblo, MD, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a cardiologist at Froedtert Hospital, has been appointed Chief Medical Officer of Froedtert Hospital. Dr. Biblo will continue to serve as the Chief Medical Officer for the Medical College Physicians, a role he has held since 2009. In that role, he supervises the clinical quality and clinical informatics officers and associate deans to achieve higher quality outcomes, greater clinical effectiveness, increased patient satisfaction and improved operating efficiency in patient care.

Feb.28 - When new medical students enter the Medical College of Wisconsin in August 2012, they will encounter a curriculum which is very different from the educational program currently in place. The Medical College is making major changes to its curriculum, the hallmarks of which will be the earlier integration of patient observation for medical students, a year-long foundational program, and a full year of symptom- and system-based units of education to ensure grounding in the basic sciences.
