College to honor National VA Research Week May 19-23
May 19, 2014 College News - The week of May 19-23 is VA Research Week, and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) will be observing the event with a series of articles that highlight the research collaboration between MCW and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. There also will be a poster session at the VA Matousek Auditorium on Monday, May 19, and in the area outside the MCW cafeteria on Tuesday, May 20, that highlight other research being conducted in collaboration with the VA. Both sessions run from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The purpose of VA Research Week is to recognize veterans for their participation in research studies and to highlight some of the discoveries and innovations that resulted from the collaboration between the two organizations.
“Beyond their service in the Armed Forces, many of our nation’s veterans have extended their service in the area of medical research, and we are profoundly grateful not only for their participation and support, but for the support of the U.S. government in funding research initiatives. The advances and discoveries coming out of our VA medical centers benefit our health and the health of generations to come,” said John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, MCW President and CEO. Dr. Raymond is also a practicing nephrologist at the VA Medical Center, and has been a VA physician for more than three decades.
The Medical College of Wisconsin has 116 faculty, 70 staff and three postdoctoral fellows from 16 departments and the Office of Research working at the VA. Research performed at the VA includes work on motor vehicle safety, spinal cord injury, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anesthetic agents, osteoarthritis, pulmonary disease, kidney stones, HIV infection, rehabilitation methods after stroke, and many other topics important to human health.
All of the physicians at the Zablocki VA are MCW faculty. Annually, the hospital records more than 500,000 outpatient visits. Approximately $10 million in research is conducted by MCW faculty at the VA.
