Dr. John P. Klein, Director of the Division of Biostatistics for 20 years, dies at age 62
College News July 22, 2013 - John P. Klein, PhD, Professor and Director of the Division of Biostatistics at the Medical College since 1993, died July 20 at age of 62. Dr. Klein also served as the Chief Statistical Director of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research, the Biostatistics Key Function Director for the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin, and Biostatistics Core Resource Director for the Cancer Center.
A world-renowned expert in biostatistical research methods in survival analysis, competing risks, and multistate modeling, Dr. Klein authored more than 187 scientific articles and 10 book chapters. His book, Survival Analysis: Techniques for Censored and Truncated Data, 2nd edition, with Melvin Moeschberger, is a standard biostatistics textbook.
He served as Associate Editor of Lifetime Data Analysis and of Biometrics and was an elected member of the International Statistical Institute and fellow of the American Statistical Association. During his time at MCW, he had advised more than 30 graduate students and earned an outstanding Graduate School mentor award.
“Dr. Klein was a dedicated and respected graduate and medical school educator and mentor, and was a passionate administrator who cared deeply about Biostatistics faculty, staff and students,” said John Meurer, MD, MBA, Director of the Institute for Health and Society.
Colleagues shared that Dr. Klein felt a clever mathematical equation was like beautiful music. He was an Eagle Scout and proud shareholder and fan of the Green Bay Packers.
He earned BA and MS degrees in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a PhD in statistics at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Prior to joining the MCW faculty, he was professor and statistical director at Ohio State University Cancer Center.
Dr. Klein is survived by his sister, Terry, and was preceded in death by his parents, Royal and Mildred Klein.
Funeral services are planned for Wednesday, July 24, at Schmidt and Bartelt, 10130 W. North Ave., There will be a visitation at 5 p.m., and a memorial service at 7 p.m.
The MCW Institute for Health and Society (IHS) is compiling a memorial and tribute to Dr. Klein.
