Dr. Jose Franco named New Curriculum Director

We are pleased to announce that Jose Franco, MD, has been selected as the New Curriculum Director. This new position will report to the Dean of the Medical School and was developed by the Curriculum Development Nominating Committee to facilitate and implement a new medical school curriculum model for the Medical College of Wisconsin. 

The New Curriculum Director will work with the New Curriculum Steering Committee and several faculty-driven work groups to focus on the various aspects of the new curriculum, which is targeted for implementation in August 2012. Dr. Franco’s appointment is effective July 1, 2011. Dr. Franco will continue in his roles as a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of Hepatology in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. 

Dr. Franco brings demonstrated and proven success in both teaching and administrative leadership. As a course, clerkship and clinical director, he has a depth of experience working with students and colleagues to achieve quality outcomes in teaching. Additionally, Dr. Franco has been a member and leader of the Curriculum and Evaluation Committee, a committee of the Faculty Council, for the past six years. He has also served as Chair of the Department of Medicine Residents’ Curriculum and Evaluation Committees, as well as the President of the Milwaukee Gastroenterological Society. 

 A graduate of Rutgers University (undergraduate), Dr. Franco received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  He completed residency training in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, followed by fellowship training in transplant hepatology at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Franco joined the Medical College of Wisconsin faculty as an Instructor in Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, in 1995.

Dr. Franco has received several teaching recognitions and awards, including the Top Teaching Award as a Senior Internal Medicine Resident at MCW, Top Senior Teaching Faculty in the Department of Medicine, the T. Michael Bolger Standing Ovation Award in 2010, and the Ernest O. Henschel Clinical Teaching Award recently awarded by the MCW Class of 2011. He has worked on 25 research grants and projects and given more than 240 lectures to local, regional and international audiences. 

Dr. Franco has mentored and taught countless residents, fellows and medical students and lends his expertise and leadership to several MCW committees, including the MCW Assessment Oversight Committee and the MCW Diversity Advisory Committee.
