Dr. Mary Horowitz appointed Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology
June 21, 2012 College News - Mary M. Horowitz, MD, MS, Robert A. Uihlein, Jr. Professor of Hematologic Research, Professor of Medicine, and a preeminent international leader in blood and bone marrow transplantation, has been appointed Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Dr. Horowitz, who is also the Scientific Director of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), has served as interim Chief of Hematology/Oncology for the past two years.
“I am very excited to have Dr. Horowitz join our leadership team on a permanent basis and have full confidence that she will help lead the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Department of Medicine to greater levels of success,” said Roy L. Silverstein, MD, Chairman and Linda and John Mellowes Professor of Medicine. “She is an outstanding clinician, researcher, teacher and mentor who has taken on increasing leadership roles in the department of medicine and the MCW Cancer Center over the past two years and has had a significant positive impact on all of our missions.”
Dr. Horowitz studies the effectiveness of transplantation as a treatment for life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers. Her outcomes-oriented and translational research programs have been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years and have been the driving forces in the field.
In addition to her MCW leadership positions, she serves as Research Director for the Stem Cell Therapeutic Outcomes Database of the C. W. Bill Young Cell Transplantation Program and Principal Investigator of the Data and Coordinating Center of the national Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network. Last year, Dr. Horowitz and colleagues received a $45 million grant to fund the Trials Network, the largest federal -grant ever awarded to MCW. She also serves as a member of numerous editorial boards and grant review panels.
A 1980 MCW alumna, Dr. Horowitz completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology and a residency in internal medicine, including a year as chief resident, in the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals Program. She also completed a Master of Science degree in biostatistics and clinical epidemiology at MCW’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
