Dr. Robert Havlik appointed Chair of Plastic Surgery, George J. Korkos, M.D., Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Will also serve as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Froedtert Hospital

March 05, 2013 College News - Robert J. Havlik, MD, has been named the Chairman of Plastic Surgery and George J. Korkos, M.D. Professor in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He will serve as the chief of plastic surgery at Froedtert Hospital, and will also see patients at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Dr. Havlik comes to MCW from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, where he serves as the chief of the division of plastic surgery, and is the James J. Harbaugh, Jr., Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.  He is also the director of the cleft and craniofacial surgery program and director of pediatric plastic surgery at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Dr. Havlik is an internationally recognized researcher for his work in cleft palate repair, and maxillofacial and craniofacial disorders.  He serves as immediate past-president of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and is past president of the American Society of Craniofacial Surgeons.  Additionally, Dr. Havlik is active in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, American College of Surgeons, American Surgical Association, American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation.

The George J. Korkos, M.D. Professor in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was established in 2006 to provide a sustainable and stable source of funds to educate the next generation of plastic and reconstructive surgeons. 

Joseph E. Kerschner, M.D., executive vice president and dean of MCW’s medical school, cited Dr. Havlik’s significant research and clinical experience as key factors in his appointment.

“Dr. Havlik is a leader in the field of plastic surgery, with significant institutional administrative leadership experience, and we look forward to him joining MCW,” Dr. Kerschner said.

Dr. Havlik graduated from the University of Michigan in 1979 and received his MD degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1984.  He did his internship and residency in general surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital, serving as chief resident from 1988-1989.  Also at Yale-New Haven Hospital, he completed a residency in plastic surgery and was chief resident of plastic surgery from 1990-1991.  He completed a hand and microvascular fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Mass., and went on to complete a craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgery fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Havlik is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, with a subspecialty in Surgery of the Hand.  His peers also named him to the Best Doctors in America database.  He will assume his new role April 15.
