Event at Arte Wine and Painting Studio to benefit Global Health Pathways scholarly project
May 28, 2013 College News - Amy Yam, a third-year medical student, is hosting a fundraiser on Thursday, May 30, at Arte Wine and Painting Studio to support her scholarly project through the Global Health Pathways program. Yam created a non-profit organization called Voces y Manos ("Voices and Hands") that supports youth leadership and community health in rural Guatemala.
Through her organization, she has organized a scholarship program that teaches local Indigenous high-school students how to conduct community health projects. Through the scholarship program, community-wide initiatives such as formal garbage collection systems and reforestation projects have been instituted. Students who receive scholarships are able to continue on to higher education so that they may return to their rural communities as professional leaders.
The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. Participants will enjoy an evening of step-by-step painting instruction with experienced and enthusiastic local artists. All artistic levels are welcome. Admission is $40.00 per person, and 50% of the proceeds go directly towards the Voces y Manos scholarship program. Arte is located at 7511 W. Harwood Ave. in Wauwatosa.
