St. Joseph Family Care Center is first MCW clinic recertified as L3 patient-centered medical home

Feb 28 - The Wheaton Franciscan-St. Joseph Family Care Center has been recertified as a Level 3 (top) Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The Family Care Center is staffed by physicians from The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Family and Community Medicine.

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin visits campus

Feb 27 - U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and members of her staff visited the Injury Research Center (IRC) at the Medical College of Wisconsin on Thursday, Feb. 21. The Senator toured the Froedtert Hospital Emergency Department and learned about the campus’s two Level 1 Trauma Centers— Froedtert and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She then participated in a discussion about injury and violence prevention with IRC faculty and staff.

New treatment gives life to young girl

Feb 27 - A young girl with a rare genetic condition is alive and thriving today because of a new treatment plan developed by Medical College of Wisconsin physicians at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Feb 27 - In honor of Black History Month, the Medical College of Wisconsin has created a series of video vignettes and stories that will be posted on InfoScope during the month of February. The vignettes highlight some of our African-American and Black faculty, staff and students and the contributions they have made. The stories highlight MCW programs that improve the health of underserved populations (including African-American and Black), offer these populations improved access to health care and education, and reduce health disparities.

Dr. E. Brooke Lerner receives Keith Neely Outstanding Contribution to EMS Award

Feb 27 - E. Brooke Lerner, PhD, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, received the Keith Neely Outstanding Contribution to EMS Award from the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). She was presented the award at the association’s annual meeting last month in Florida.

TOPS Club funds obesity research as Medical College center evolves with new avenues of study

Feb 26 - A new era of exciting research is developing under enthused leadership at the Medical College of Wisconsin’s TOPS Obesity and Metabolic Research Center.

Dr. Rebekah Gundry receives Robert J. Cotter Young Investigator Award

Feb 26 - Rebekah Gundry, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, has been awarded the 2013 Robert J. Cotter Young Investigator Award by the U.S. Human Proteome Organization (US HUPO).

Researchers to study effects of criminalization of HIV exposure

Feb 26 - The Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) Center for AIDS Intervention Research (CAIR) has received a one year, $50,000 grant to study the tensions the criminalization of HIV exposure creates in public health, and the resulting impact on clients.

MCW to host SoCRA Certification Preparation and Review Course and Certification Exam

Feb 26 - The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office and Office of Research are hosting the upcoming Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) Certification Preparation and Review Course and Certification Exam.

Froedtert & The Medical College named to 100 top hospital list

Feb 25 - Congratulations to all Froedtert Hospital and Medical College of Wisconsin staff, physicians and providers. Today, Truven Health Analytics, formerly the health care business of Thomson Reuters, is announcing that we are among the top 15 Major Teaching Hospitals in its 2013 analysis of Top Hospitals. The list compares peers in these categories: Major Teaching Hospitals, Teaching Hospitals and Large, Medium and Small Community Hospitals.

Anthony Caples receives Black Excellence Award for Community Leadership from Milwaukee Times

Feb 25 - Anthony Caples, Community Outreach Coordinator in the Institute for Health and Society’s Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI), received the Black Excellence Award for Community Leadership from the Milwaukee Times weekly newspaper. Caples will receive the award at the publication’s award ceremony on Feb. 22.

Mayfair Road/Highway 100 construction work

Feb 22 - Beginning Monday, Feb. 25, and continuing through Mid-December, construction work will be conducted on Mayfair Road/Hwy 100. The Mayfair Road/Hwy 100 project is part of the larger Zoo Interchange Reconstruction project.

Milwaukee Police sergeant begins research fund while fighting rare abdominal cancer

Feb 21 - “What did you wish for, Bella?” Sebastian Raclaw asked his daughter as her coin broke the water’s surface and came to rest on the bottom of the wishing well. Just a few months earlier, the 35-year-old Milwaukee Police sergeant had been diagnosed with stage 4 abdominal cancer, initially deemed incurable. As he sat with his wife and two young children in the warmth and whimsy of Disney World, Raclaw thought about the difficult surgical procedure that awaited him upon their return from vacation and the glimmer of hope it offered.

New treatment hits the target

Feb 21 - A new understanding of cancer as a genetic disease, in which individual gene mutations drive cancer cell growth, is giving rise to a new type of treatment that holds great promise for cancer care.

Medical College of Wisconsin researchers tackle concussions from all angles

Reproductive Medical Center moving to Community Memorial Medical Commons

Feb 21 - The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Reproductive Medicine Center is on the move. The center which is currently located currently located on the 5th floor of the Pavilion building will be moving to the Community Memorial Medical Commons (CMMC) in Menomonee Falls.

Feb 18 - Bonnie Freudinger and Brian Laning, members of the Biotechnology and Bioengineering Center’s Engineering Team, recently took 3rd place out of 211 submissions in an international competition focused on innovation.

HWPP releases request for proposals

Feb 13 - The Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (HWPP) recently released its 9th funding cycle request for proposal (RFP). As in prior funding cycles, HWPP will continue to support Development and Impact projects that address health improvement through community - MCW academic partnerships.

MCW researchers to study tuberculosis immunity

Feb 12 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a two year, $420,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study proteins associated with tuberculosis immunity.

Medical College applauds Governor Walker’s effort to address Wisconsin’s physician shortage

Feb 12 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) applauds Governor Scott Walker for his leadership to address the state’s impending physician shortage. As part of his executive budget proposal, the Governor announced he will invest $7.4 million in MCW’s Community Medical Education Program (CMEP) to train new physicians in central and northeast Wisconsin.

Dr. Gretchen Mandel, former Department of Medicine faculty member, dies at age 66

Feb 11 - Gretchen Mandel, PhD, a 29-year member of the MCW Department of Medicine faculty, died Sunday, Feb. 10, at the age of 66.

Dr. Jay Sandlow elected President-elect of the American Society of Andrology

Feb 08 - Jay Sandlow, MD, Vice Chairman and Professor of Urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been elected President-Elect of the American Society of Andrology. He begins this new position on April 16, and will become the society’s President in April 2014.

Watertown Plank Road Work near Innovation Drive

Feb 06 - All work east of Innovation along Watertown Plank will be completed by the end of next week. There will be lane closures WB along Watertown Plank west of Innovation for the next three weeks.

Grant will support HIV prevention research training

Feb 07 - The Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) Center for AIDS Intervention Research (CAIR) has received a five-year, $919,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Mental Health to support its post-doctoral fellowship program. The training program has been continually supported since its inception in 1996.

Keel’s Casino Night to benefit MCW cancer research

Feb 06 - The first Keel’s Casino Night will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Sheraton Hotel in Brookfield. Proceeds from the event benefit Ann’s Hope Foundation, which supports cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Isaac Pierre named Family Medicine Educator of the Year

Feb 05 - Isaac D. Pierre, MD, Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Associate Program Director and Director of Predoctoral Education in the Columbia St. Mary’s Family Medicine Residency Program, has received the 2012 Family Medicine Educator of the Year award from the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians.

Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Run/Walk on Feb. 16 to benefit MCW cardiac research

Feb 04 - The 17th Annual Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Club Run & Walk will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. at Wil-O-Way Recreation Center, 10602 Underwood Parkway, in Wauwatosa. The event supports heart research at the internationally recognized Cardiovascular Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin, in which more than 170 faculty physicians and research scientists study the causes, prevention and treatment of heart disease.

Children's Hospital of Wisconsin ranked No. 4 in the nation by "Parents" magazine

Feb 04 - Parents magazine today revealed the exclusive findings from its 10 Best Children’s Hospitals survey, ranking Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin No. 4 in the nation. In addition, six specialty programs were ranked in the top 10, including preemie and newborn care No. 1, emergency care No. 3, orthopedic care No. 6, heart care No. 7, pulmonary care No. 8 and cancer care No. 9.
