Froedtert & The Medical College named to 100 top hospital list
Feb. 25, 2013 College News - Congratulations to all Froedtert Hospital and Medical College of Wisconsin staff, physicians and providers. Today, Truven Health Analytics, formerly the health care business of Thomson Reuters, is announcing that we are among the top 15 Major Teaching Hospitals in its 2013 analysis of Top Hospitals. The list compares peers in these categories: Major Teaching Hospitals, Teaching Hospitals and Large, Medium and Small Community Hospitals.
Hospitals do not apply and winners do not pay to market this honor. We were the only hospital in Southeastern Wisconsin to be ranked, and one of four ranked in Wisconsin.
Truven’s methodology is objective and comes from trusted public sources. The primary data sources are Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (Med PAR) dataset and the Medicare Cost Report. They use the most recent five years of Cost Reports and three years of Med PAR data available.
Several other datasets are used including core measures and patient satisfaction survey data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - HCAHPS. Residency program information used in classifying major teaching hospitals is from the American Medical Association Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited programs and the American Osteopathic Association. After excluding hospitals with data that would skew study results (i.e. specialty hospitals), they have a database study group of nearly 3,000 hospitals.
Because bed size and teaching status have a profound effect on the types of patients hospitals treat and scope of services it provides, they assign each hospital in the database to one of five comparison groups, according to size and teaching status.
Truven reports that 100 Top Hospitals outperform their peers by demonstrating excellence – operating effectively across all functional areas. Based on comparisons between the study winners and a peer group of similar high volume hospitals that were not winners, Truven found that if all hospitals performed at the level of this year’s winners:
-
More than 164,000 additional lives could be saved
-
Nearly 82,000 additional patients could be complication free
-
$6 billion could be saved
-
The typical patient could be released from the hospital half a day sooner
They based this analysis on the Medicare patients included in this study. If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.
