Jan. 31 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a two-year, $411,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Mental Health to research new strategies aimed at increasing HIV testing and counseling in new immigrants to the United States.
Jan. 27 - The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation EMG (Electromyography) Lab, under the Medical Directorship of David Del Toro, MD, has received accreditation with exemplary status from the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnositic Medicine (AANEM). PM&R’s EMG lab is the first EMG lab in the State of Wisconsin to be accredited by the AANEM.
Jan. 27 - Roger Fons, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He will practice at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital. Board certified in anesthesiology and family practice, Dr. Fons’ clinical interests include acute pain management and regional anesthesia. Additionally, he has an interest in providing health care in underserved areas, both locally and internationally.
Jan. 26 - John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, President and CEO, will be in the spotlight on Saturday, January 28, participating in a ballroom dance competition to pay tribute to the second chances that are made possible through the miracle of transplantation and the gift of organ donation. The event has been organized by the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin to promote awareness of Wisconsin’s new online donor registry (www.YesIWillWisconsin.com).
Jan. 26 - Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare is building a new 25,000 square foot Family Care Center at 2400 W. Villard in Milwaukee to house outpatient primary care services. The new medical office, expected to be completed by June 15, will continue to be the teaching site for the St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency Program, a partnership with The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Jan. 19 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a $2.1 million, four-year grant from the National Institute of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse to study the role of gangs and environmental factors on gang members’ drug use, sexual activity, and other high-risk behaviors.

Jan. 17 - On Monday, Jan. 16,Cancer advocates from the Wisconsin Coalition for Cancer Treatment Access (WCCTA) called on Senate Health Committee Chair Leah Vukmir and Assembly Insurance Committee Chair Kevin Petersen, as well as leaders in both chambers, to hold a public hearing to discuss legislation (S.101 / A.151) to increase patient access to affordable oral chemotherapies. Bill sponsors Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Rep. Pat Strachota (R-West Bend) joined the group at the Medical College of Wisconsin to urge their colleagues to take up the bills for consideration.

Jan. 13 - Randall Kuhlmann, MD, PhD, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, has been named program director of the Fetal Concerns Center of Wisconsin by Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The center is a joint program of Children’s Hospital, Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Jan. 12 - The Wisconsin Center of Excellence in Genomics Science, which brings together collaborative interdisciplinary research teams to develop novel technologies that significantly advance genomic research, has been awarded a $6.2 million grant extension from the National Institutes of Health’s National Human Genome Research Institute .
Jan. 12 - The John M. Kohler Foundation has given $250,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin Global Health Program in memory of Dr. Elaine Kohler, a former MCW Associate Professor of Pediatrics (1968-1981) and alumni of the pediatrics fellowship (1968). The funding, which is the largest gift the Global Health Program has received from a single donor, will help establish the Dr. Elaine Kohler Summer Academy of Global Health Research and the Dr. Elaine Kohler Global Health Elective Scholarship.

Jan. 6 - The third annual Liver/Pancreas Symposium will be held Friday, Feb. 3, and Saturday, Feb. 4, at locations at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin. This symposium will include didactic sessions and offer participants the opportunity to observe cases in the GI lab, interventional radiology suite, and operating rooms.

The grants are funded by the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse and the State of Wisconsin tax check-off program. Letters of intent are due before the end of January 2012.
