CAMPUS ALERT: Watertown Plank Road/US45 Ramp Closures Begin January 6th!

Please plan ahead and use available resources to determine your best route to campus.  Allow extra time for travel as congestion and delays are likely to occur while new traffic patterns are learned.

Due to the frigid weather forecast, the following closures will occur beginning 5:00 a.m. on January 6th (previously set for the evening):

  • Watertown Plank Road under US45, from Innovation Drive to Discovery Parkway will fully close until late 2014.
  • Watertown Plank Road on-ramp to US45 southbound closes;
  • The US45 northbound off-ramp to Watertown Plank Road will close.
  • Open to Research Park: US45 southbound exit to westbound Watertown Plank Road will remain available until summer 2014.

Available Resources:

The latest information on the long-term closures of Watertown Plank Road and US45 ramps is available to you through several sources:

OPEN ROADWAYS:

Swan Boulevard: Swan Boulevard is open and now connects Watertown Plank Road to Discovery Parkway. This is a vital link for our campus to access areas to the north and west of US45 after Watertown Plank Road closes on January 6th.

Discovery Parkway: The closure of Watertown Plank Road begins just to the west of Discovery Parkway. To encourage traffic flow, Discovery Parkway southbound will flow freely onto Watertown Plank Road east with no traffic signals or stop signs.  Likewise, westbound Watertown Plank Road traffic will flow freely onto northbound Discovery Parkway without traffic signals or stop signs.

Hwy 100: Hwy 100 has fully reopened from Watertown Plank Road through Bluemound Road, including additional through lanes and multiple intersection turn lanes. No more orange barrels! Enjoy the ride.

Wisconsin Avenue driving:  After January 6th, Wisconsin Avenue will become the front door to the organizations on our campus. Next week, Milwaukee and Wauwatosa police departments will have a presence on Wisconsin Avenue to assist traffic.  Please pay close attention to the marked lanes and signs that designate traffic lanes.

  • Two lanes of traffic – designated by pavement markings, overhead signs and a flashing electronic sign – may turn left onto north 92nd Street from Wisconsin Avenue eastbound.  Only one lane of traffic continues eastbound. Watch your lane.
  • From US 45 north to Wisconsin Avenue eastbound, two right turn only lanes are available. Only traffic in the right-hand turn lane may turn right on red. All other lanes must wait for the green signal before proceeding. Be sure to stay in your lane.

Wisconsin Avenue Parking Restrictions: The City of Milwaukee has implemented new parking restrictions on Wisconsin Avenue between 92nd Street and 87th Street to assist with traffic flow.  Parking will no longer be allowed between 6:00-8:30am and 3:30 – 6:00pm, Monday – Friday.

Bus Route 31 Changes Effective 1/5/2014

Route 31 (State – Highland) will detour due to the long term closure of Watertown Plank Road between 92nd Street and Innovation Drive/Swan Boulevard. New schedules are available in information racks and on buses. The new schedule is also available on www.RideMCTS.com

Route 31 will begin the following detours effective the morning of January 6th

  • Westbound Detour Routing

West on Watertown Plank Road, north on Discovery Parkway, southwest on Swan Boulevard and continue south to Watertown Plank Road and west to regular route.

  • Eastbound Detour Routing

From Innovation Drive: north on Swan Boulevard, continue northeast to Discovery Parkway and south to Watertown Plank Road and east to regular route.

Fare-free Route:

To help ensure public safety, accessibility and mobility during the project, pedestrians will receive assistance to ride the bus free of charge in the detour area through a partnership between the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Milwaukee County Department of Transportation. Pedestrians needing to travel on Watertown Plank Road between 92nd Street and Innovation Drive/Swan Boulevard will not be required to pay a fare when boarding a Route 31 bus on 92nd Street near Curative, on Connell Avenue west of 92nd Street at Behavioral Health, or on Watertown Plank Road at Innovation Drive/Swan Boulevard. However, if a transfer is requested the passenger must pay full fare. Please watch for signs in the area.

Other Campus Restrictions:

87th Street: Beginning next week, a two-week utility work project will begin on 87th Street just south of Watertown Plank Road.  Traffic patterns will switch traffic to the west side of the roadway. One lane of traffic will remain available in each direction for the duration of the project but turn lanes may become restricted.  Delays may occur.

92nd Street: Beginning the week of January 13th, a three-week utility project will occur on 92nd Street just north of Connell Avenue.  Traffic will be switched to one side of the roadway and turn lanes may become restricted.  Access to all organizations will be available but delays may occur.
