Lane closures around campus during the week of Nov. 4

Nov. 01, 2013 College News - Below is a list of lane closures around campus the week of Nov. 4, 2013. All road work is subject to change because of weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Additional information about the Zoo interchange project and its impact on MCW and the campus can be found on the College’s Zoo interchange Web page.

Milwaukee Regional Medical Center remains accessible from all directions the week of Nov. 4

Campus Alerts:

  • OPEN!  Discovery Parkway is now open and provides a good option for travelers arriving/departing via US45 (Use Discovery Pkwy, Swan Blvd and North Ave) or through Wauwatosa.
  • Lane Restrictions: On Monday evening, US45 north and south will see double lane closures at Watertown Plank Road and North Avenue for Swan Boulevard bridge work. The lane restrictions will cause the North Avenue to US45 south ramp to close overnight along with the west-to-north Zoo Interchange ramp. Follow posted detours.
  • Children’s Hospital north garage level B entrance is closed long-term during the Ronald McDonald pedestrian bridge construction. Level C remains open.
  • Ronald McDonald Pedestrian Bridge project has begun.  Be aware of increased noise and vibration from pile driving activities in the area.
  • Bus Stops: Ongoing utility work on Watertown Plank Road will cause bus stops to temporarily relocate over the next couple of months. Milwaukee County Transit will install royal blue feather flags as indicators of the current bus stop locations.

Watertown Plank Road access

  • Access to Behavioral Health will see restrictions next week to construct a frontage road to better access to the complex.  It will include a Monday daytime closure of 95th Street and a Tuesday daytime closure of 97th Street. The new connection from Connell Avenue will be completed this week as well.
  • Watertown Plank Road Park & Ride Lot closed on Nov. 1st; the new Burleigh Street & US45 Park & Ride lot opens.
  • Watertown Plank Rd entrance ramp to US45 northbound is closed now through 2014. DETOUR OPTIONS:
    -Wisconsin Avenue to US45 north;
    -Watertown Plank Rd west to Hwy 100 north to North Ave. onramp to US45;
    -Discovery Parkway to Swan Blvd to North Ave. onramp to US45.
  • Trailblazing signs to US45 are installed at major exit points on campus to help drivers navigate the ramp closures.
  • Due to ongoing utility work, lanes on Watertown Plank Road will be reduced to 1 lane in each direction throughout the day.
    • Recommended route: Wisconsin Avenue on the south side of campus offers construction-free access from US45.

From the North:

  • OPEN: Discovery Parkway is now open and provides another option for travelers from the north! North Avenue and Swan Boulevard provide access to US45 or downtown Wauwatosa.
  • The Swan Boulevard bridge has been demolished and southbound lanes are detoured at Underwood Parkway.
    • DETOUR: The southbound lanes of Swan Boulevard will be detoured at Underwood Parkway.

From the South:

  • Watch your lanes! Please be mindful of the traffic signals and lane markings as you exit onto Wisconsin Avenue from US 45 north and at the 92nd Street intersection. Several “near misses” have been reported from inattentive lane changes. Police activity in the area will increase over the next few weeks to help reinforce proper driving behaviors.
  • CLOSURE ALERT: The 84th Street entrance ramps to I-94 eastbound and westbound are closed now through late spring 2014.  The I94 exit ramp onto 84th Street will remain open and accessible for campus travel. DETOURS:
    -I94 eastbound: Use the 68th Street I-94 eastbound entrance ramp;
    -I94 westbound: Take Wisconsin Avenue to the US 45 south entrance ramp.
  • The Hank Aaron State Trail will close between 94th Street and Underwood Creek Parkway on Nov. 4 and remain closed for four years. Oakleaf Trail remains open and will serve as part of the detour.

Travel from the East:

  • COMPLETED! The City of Wauwatosa’s water main work, that reduced traffic to one lane between Glenview Avenue and Dewey Avenue, is scheduled to wrap up at the end of the week.

From the West:

  • Underwood Parkway - just north of Watertown Plank Rd - closes for two weeks beginning Nov. 4th. Business access remains available.  On Nov. 18th, Underwood will reopen in its final configuration with access available off the new Swan Boulevard.
  • LONG-TERM CLOSURE: The I-94 eastbound and westbound exit ramps to Hwy 100 northbound are closed through 2014.
    DETOUR: Take US45 northbound to Bluemound or Wisconsin to access the MRMC campus or Research Park.
  • I94 westbound will see double lane closures overnight at Hwy 100 throughout the week.  The lane restrictions will cause the Zoo Interchange north-to-west and south-to-west ramps to close overnight as well. Follow posted detours.

A Look-Ahead:

Mid-November:

  • Median removals are currently underway on Watertown Plank Road in preparation for all traffic to switch to the south side of the roadway. One lane of travel will remain open in both directions.
  • A new I94 eastbound off-ramp to access 76th Street will be constructed.  It will be completed by mid-November and allow the 84th Street off-ramp to close to begin work.

December:

  • Swan Boulevard reopens between Watertown Plank Road and Discovery Parkway in its final configuration.
  • Hwy 100 expected to fully open in its final configuration.

January 6, 2014: UPDATE

  • Full closure of Watertown Plank Road under US45, from Innovation Drive to Discovery Parkway;
  • Watertown Plank Road on-ramp to US45 southbound closes;
  • NEW: The US45 northbound off-ramp to Watertown Plank will close.  More details to come.
