MCW Anesthesia Simulation Program obtains American Society of Anesthesiologists’ endorsement

ASA endorsement is a symbol of an elite, top-quality training facility

July 05, 2013 College News - The Medical College of Wisconsin Anesthesia Simulation Program has achieved the endorsement of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). MCW joins an elite, nationwide group of 34 currently endorsed centers maintaining this distinction.

“We are proud of the work we do at the MCW Anesthesia Simulation Program, and the ASA’s endorsement further reinforces the caliber of training we provide to physicians,” said program director Jutta Novalija, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology

This endorsement is good news for the average patient because increasing evidence suggests that simulation education can have a positive impact on patient safety and quality of care. Anesthesiology has traditionally been at the forefront of simulation research and training, and the ASA’s endorsement of the program demonstrates this type of training remains a top-priority for the specialty.

“We are delighted to bestow this recognition on the MCW Anesthesia Simulation Program,” said Randy Steadman, MD, head of the Simulation Education network task force. “The ASA’s endorsement will serve as a guidepost for our members and all anesthesiologists who are looking to complete high-quality simulation-based continuing medical education.”

The approval process for an Anesthesia Simulation Program is extensive and includes the ASA review of the center’s mission, educational offerings, curriculum development, instructor and course effectiveness, program leadership, infrastructure and standing with ACGME. Board-certified physicians seek an ASA-endorsed center for simulation education that is required to maintain their certification.
