Oct. 04, 2012 College News - Recognizing and treating depression will be the focus of the first Depression Recognition Day at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly one in ten Americans has experienced depression in their lifetime. Five percent have recurring bouts of depression. Half of those impacted by depression will never seek medical help for it.
The public is invited to attend two one-hour discussions offered by MCW’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. At 12 p.m., Dr. Carlyle Chan, a psychiatrist and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, will address the many faces and facets of depression. At 4 p.m., Dr. Christina Wichman, a psychiatrist at Froedtert & The Medical College, will talk about identifying and managing postpartum depression.
In addition to the lectures, mental health professionals at MCW will offer free materials about depression, including a self-rating tool.
Depression Recognition Day is sponsored by the MCW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine in collaboration with the Charles E. Kubly Foundation.
Discussions will be held on the first floor of MCW’s Medical Education Building. Parking is available directly across the street in the visitors’ parking lot.
