Medical students attend AAMC meeting, present poster

Nov. 14, 2013 College News - Third-year medical student Anish Patel and second-year medical student Melanie Bobbs attended the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual meeting in Philadelphia Nov. 1-3 as representatives of the MCW chapter of Organization of Student Representatives (OSR). With the help and guidance of Martin Muntz, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Patel and Bobbs presented two posters at the OSR poster session.

The first poster, Early Clinical Experiences within the MCW Discovery Curriculum, compared and contrasted the new Discovery Curriculum and the traditional curriculum. Among the many changes, the poster highlighted the greater amount of clinical application in classes and clinical exposure.  The second poster, The Clinical Apprenticeship: A Unique Approach to Early Clinical Exposure, introduced the clinical apprenticeship, a new course in the Discovery Curriculum that matches M1 students with preceptors from various specialties. For one year, students spend four hours per week with their preceptor, completing assignments correlating to their classroom work and transitioning to become a vital factor of the patient care team.

OSR is a branch of the AAMC that serves as a platform for student input and discussion. In addition to presenting the posters, Patel and Bobbs had an opportunity to meet with fellow OSR representatives from throughout the country to discuss a variety of issues relevant to medical students. They also participated in the OSR's Minority Student Career Fair, where they spoke to various groups of high school and college students on the process of applying to medical school.
