PM&R team publishes article on offering residents a global health perspective in integrative rehabilitation medicine

June 06, 2013 College News - A team from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and their collaborators in Pavia, Italy, published a paper in the June 2013 issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on the benefits of offering residents a global integrative medicine rotation.

For the past five years, the MCW Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has collaborated with the Association for Active Integrative Medicine, in Pavia and Milan, Italy, to introduce residents to a global health perspective in integrative rehabilitation medicine that incorporates integration of complementary and alternative medicine with traditional interventions. As part of the program, PM&R residents are offered opportunities to participate in a one-month elective rotation in “integrative rehabilitation medicine for acute and chronic pain disorders” in Italy.

As part of the four-week rotation, residents develop an integrative treatment strategy for each patient using conventional medical care and other therapeutic options, including acupuncture, biofeedback, aquatic therapy, yoga, and others. Post-rotation assessment included evaluations by Italian team and patients, residents’ evidence-based presentations, and post-rotation self-reflection. According to the study findings, participating residents reported high achievement in clinical performance, improved application of integrative medicine, broader appreciation of cultural diversity in patient care, and increased personal and professional development.

Team members include Judith B. Kosasih, MD, Associate Professor of PM&R; Daniela H. Jurisic, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of PM&R, and Cristiano Gandini, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of PM&R, who are both from the Association for Active Integrative Medicine in Pavia, Italy; Carley N. Sauter, MD, Assistant Professor of PM&R; and Diane W. Braza, MD, Chairman and Professor of PM&R.
