Sam Memorial Walk/Run on Aug. 24 to benefit MCW cancer research
July 17, 2013 College News - The 14th annual Sam Memorial Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. Agnes Parish, 12801 W. Fairmount, in Butler. Check-in begins at 9:15 a.m. for the 10 a.m. event. Participants can choose to run or walk the two-mile course through the streets of Butler, beginning and ending at St. Agnes. The cost is $15 for individuals or$40 for families.
This event is held in memory of Sam Beres. Sam was a kindergarten student at St. Agnes School when he lost his battle with leukemia in April 2000, at the age of six. Sam’s mother, Cathy Bisswurm-Vogel, will serve as the honorary race starter.
Funds raised from this event will benefit research conducted in the laboratory of David A. Margolis, MD, Professor of Pediatrics (Hematology and Oncology) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The fund’s name -- the Sam Memorial “HOOT” Fund – reflects its goal to turn Hematologic Oncology Treatment (HOT) units into “Happily Out Of Tenants” (HOOT) units.
Since 2000, St. Agnes has raised more than $136, 000 to the Sam Memorial “HOOT” Fund through this annual walk/run. Additional information is available on the flyer/registration form (PDF).
