Summer road closures are upon us -- time to plan your alternate route
July 05, 2013 College News - The planned road closure schedule on the roads surrounding the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus kicks into high gear in July and August. In the crossfire are Glenview Avenue & Wisconsin Avenue, Hwy 100 (Mayfair Road) & Bluemound Road and Hwy 100 and Watertown Plank Road. Below is a summary of the work that will occur and the recommended travel alternatives. A construction map (PDF) provides additional detail.
Beginning July 9th, Glenview Avenue will be closed between just north of the Bluemound Road intersection to just north of the Wisconsin Avenue Intersection. \This closure will be in effect until the end of August. The intersection of Glenview Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue, however, will reopen by the end of July.
Access to Bluemound Road eastbound and westbound is permitted from Glenview Avenue north, but delays are expected. Residential traffic only will be allowed onto the local streets. Please be mindful of our neighbors and avoid detours through the neighborhoods.
To avoid delays, eastbound travel options include using US 45 N to North Avenue or US 45 S to Bluemound Road. Westbound travelers should consider I94 N/Hwy 45 N/ Wisconsin Avenue east.
Watertown Plank Road
All summer and into the fall, utility work will continue to close lanes periodically on Watertown Plank Road between 87th Street and US 45. Because of the potential delays this may cause during peak travel times, Wisconsin Avenue will soon become the best access road to our campus.
By mid July, the parking lanes between 92nd and Hwy 45 will be removed and transitioned into an additional lane of travel in each direction. Dual turn lanes from US 45 north and south will be operational, along with new traffic lights offering dual left turns onto 92nd street. After the Wisconsin Avenue bridge reopens with all four lanes, all these improvements will offer construction-free travel onto our campus.
Hwy 100 (Mayfair Road)
Work on Hwy 100 intensifies in July and August. The good news that is the intersections of Bluemound Road and Hwy 100, and Watertown Plank Road and Hwy 100 will no longer be fully closed as originally planned; only westbound closures in the intersections will cause detours for those traveling from the west.
No restrictions are in place to access the MRMC campus, Research Park or the Tosa Center via Watertown Plank Road or Wisconsin Avenue from US 45 or Hwy 100. Tosa Center visitors should plan to use the Hwy 100 driveway entrance.
For travel from the west, the following restrictions will be in effect:
Bluemound Road will close at the intersection of Hwy 100 from July 20-31. Northbound access to Hwy 100 from Bluemound Road will not be permitted. Please detour by using 115th Street to Watertown Plank Road.
Watertown Plank Road will close at the intersection of Hwy 100 from Aug. 1-10. Access to the Tosa Center driveway on Watertown Plank Road will be available during the closure. Detour around the closure by using 115th Street to Bluemound Road.
Access from I94 west to Hwy 100 north is available throughout the closures.
After months of construction that included a demolition, entry/exit ramps and road closures and fascinating rebuilding activities, Glenview Avenue is scheduled to open by the end of July. Although pedestrian access will remain restricted for a period of time, a new, wider bridge with two freeway entrance ramps will now reconnect east/west travel spanning US 45. Hurrah! (Did we mention that that Cleveland Avenue bridge is now closed?)
