The FCD Quarterly Brief: Fostering faculty collaboration
In the first installment of our quarterly report on the MCW Faculty Collaboration Database, we take a look at the primary purpose of this unique tool.
The aptly-named Faculty Collaboration Database (FCD) was developed to foster collaboration between faculty members of the Medical College of Wisconsin and thereby support and enhance the research advances, patient care needs, educational excellence and business requirements of the College. The FCD was initiated by the Faculty Career Development committee, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and the Office of Research. It was developed by the staff of the MCW Bioinformatics program and ongoing support is provided by MCW Libraries.
Perhaps the fundamental question at the heart of the FCD is just how the tool facilitates collaboration. The answer lies in the creation of a platform where interested users can search through faculty profiles in order to identify people with similar interests, and then contact them through a simple form. In this way, an MCW researcher interested in magnetic resonance imaging can find and connect with researchers doing related work right on campus. And the collaboration is not limited to MCW: additional CTSI faculty including some from Marquette University and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are now included in the FCD, additional faculty from the Milwaukee School of Engineering will soon be added as well, and researchers around the world can search across the public profiles of our faculty.
The search capabilities of the FCD depend on the information provided in the faculty profile, and of the 1,690 faculty members in the FCD, 1,301 have logged in and updated their profiles (a total of 77%). With over 500,000 FCD searches in the past year, having an up-to-date profile might make all the difference in finding a potential collaborator. If you have questions about your profile or need help updating, please contact FCD Help.

Do you have, or know of, a story related to finding a collaborator through use of the FCD? We’d love to hear about it! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know about your experience.
Note: Stop by the Todd Wehr Library on April 11th at 10:30am for our first quarterly FCD walk-in training session!
